                                A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-1                                   AN ACT
 1-2     relating to certain court costs imposed on a person convicted of an
 1-3     offense.
 1-4           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-5           SECTION 1. Article 102.075(m), Code of Criminal Procedure, is
 1-6     amended to read as follows:
 1-7           (m)  In addition to the cost on conviction imposed by
 1-8     Subsection (a), a person convicted of an offense described by
 1-9     Subsection (a)  shall pay 50 [25] cents on conviction of the
1-10     offense. The comptroller shall deposit money received under this
1-11     subsection to the credit of an account in the state treasury to be
1-12     used only for the establishment and operation of the Center for the
1-13     Study and Prevention of Juvenile Crime and Delinquency at Prairie
1-14     View A&M University.  Subsection (h) does not apply to money
1-15     received under this subsection.
1-16           SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act applies only to
1-17     a court cost imposed on conviction of an offense committed on or
1-18     after the effective date of this Act. A court cost imposed on
1-19     conviction of an offense committed before the effective date of
1-20     this Act is governed by the law in effect when the offense was
1-21     committed, and the former law is continued in effect for that
1-22     purpose.  For the purposes of this section, an offense was
1-23     committed before the effective date of this Act if any element of
1-24     the offense occurred before that date.
 2-1           SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
