                                A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-1                                   AN ACT
 1-2     relating to career and technology education in public schools.
 1-3           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-4           SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 28, Education Code, is
 1-5     amended by adding Section 28.0021 to read as follows:
 1-6           Sec. 28.0021.  COURSE SUBSTITUTION. The commissioner may
 1-7     permit a school district to substitute a career and technology
 1-8     course for a course in the required curriculum under Section 28.002
 1-9     if the commissioner determines that the courses are substantially
1-10     identical.
1-11           SECTION 2.  This Act takes effect immediately and applies
1-12     beginning with the 2001-2002 school year if this Act receives a
1-13     vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
1-14     provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution.  If this
1-15     Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect,
1-16     Section 2 takes effect September 1, 2001.
