 1-1                        SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
 1-2           WHEREAS, The Texas Legislature is proud to recognize
 1-3     Hutchinson County on the 100th anniversary of its founding and to
 1-4     join the citizens of the county in honoring their important
 1-5     contributions to our state; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, Named for pioneer jurist Anderson Hutchinson, the
 1-7     area that comprises the county today was traversed by Coronado and
 1-8     his men in search of the Seven Cities of Cibolo in 1541; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, In the 1700s, Comanche Indians had driven the Apache
1-10     Indians out of the area, and considered it Comanche land; in the
1-11     early 1840s, William Bent built the Bent Brothers Trading Post to
1-12     trade horses with the Comanches; it was known as Fort Adobe; and
1-13           WHEREAS, The first Battle of Adobe Walls took place in 1864
1-14     with Kit Carson, 200 infantry cavalry, and 75 Indian Scouts
1-15     fighting against Douhasan Kiowa Indian Chief; this battle was known
1-16     as the largest Plains Indian battle ever fought in Texas; and
1-17           WHEREAS, On June 27, 1874, 28 buffalo hunters and one woman
1-18     led by Billy Dixon and Bat Masterson fought the second Battle of
1-19     Adobe Walls, against 400 Southern Plains Indians led by Comanche
1-20     Chief Quanah Parker; and
1-21           WHEREAS, In August, 1874, Colonel Miles skirmished with 65
1-22     troops against 100 Indians in the ruins of Adobe Walls stockades;
1-23     this was the third Battle of Adobe Walls; the results of the
1-24     battles were to open the way for railroads, ranches, and farms in
 2-1     Hutchinson County; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, With the organization of the county in 1901, the
 2-3     county seat was at New Town at Plemons; in 1921 came the first
 2-4     discovery of oil in the Panhandle on the 6666 Ranch; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, Hutchinson County has many lovely historical sites
 2-6     and markers, including the only national monument in Texas at the
 2-7     Alibates Flint Quarries which is a source of beautiful flint that
 2-8     was used by the Indians; and
 2-9           WHEREAS, Proud of their county's colorful history, the
2-10     residents of Hutchinson County look forward to the celebration of
2-11     its centennial this year; now, therefore, be it
2-12           RESOLVED, That the 77th Legislature of the State of Texas
2-13     hereby commend the achievements and contributions of the citizens
2-14     of Hutchinson County on their 100th anniversary; and, be it further
2-15           RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared as a
2-16     memento of this special year in the history of Hutchinson County.
