 1-1                        SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
 1-2           WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas is pleased to
 1-3     recognize the City of Borger on the grand occasion of the 75th
 1-4     anniversary of its founding; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, In 1926, A. P. Borger, a real estate promoter,
 1-6     bought 240 acres in Texas with the express purpose of creating a
 1-7     town; the Texas oil boom was well under way in the mid-1920s, and
 1-8     people flocked to the new settlement, hoping to find their own
 1-9     prosperity; and
1-10           WHEREAS, An election was called on October 28, 1926, to
1-11     incorporate the City of Borger; the town soon had its own railway
1-12     station and post office; unfortunately, it also developed many of
1-13     the problems associated with rapidly expanding urban areas; crime
1-14     escalated, while infrastructure construction and sanitation
1-15     regulations suffered; and
1-16           WHEREAS, The Great Depression brought an end to Borger's
1-17     decadent, boom-town days; residents shifted their attention from
1-18     getting rich to making civic improvements; with the help of the
1-19     Work Projects Administration, Borger's streets and buildings were
1-20     improved; and
1-21           WHEREAS, Following World War II, the City of Borger saw
1-22     several significant changes; the Hutchinson County Airport was
1-23     constructed north of town in 1949; by the 1960s Borger was one of
1-24     the largest centers for oil, carbon black, and petrochemical
 2-1     production and supplies in the state; manufacturers and businesses
 2-2     entered the area, expanding the local economy and increasing
 2-3     prosperity; and
 2-4           WHEREAS, Today, after 75 years of existence, Borger remains
 2-5     an important shipping point for petroleum and agricultural products
 2-6     produced in the region; a grand place, with industrious,
 2-7     civic-minded residents, and a healthy economy, the City of Borger
 2-8     can look forward to a bright future in the new millennium; now,
 2-9     therefore, be it
2-10           RESOLVED, That the 77th Legislature of the State of Texas
2-11     hereby congratulate citizens of Borger on the 75th anniversary of
2-12     its founding and send best wishes for joyous anniversary
2-13     festivities; and, be it further
2-14           RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for
2-15     residents of Borger to mark this special day in their town's
2-16     history.
