No. 43 1-1 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas is pleased to 1-3 recognize one of the state's historical treasures, the Pearl 1-4 Brewery Company facility in San Antonio; and 1-5 WHEREAS, The Pearl Brewing Company began in 1885, when a 1-6 group of leading San Antonio citizens purchased the City Brewery, 1-7 the present-day location of Pearl Brewing Company's facilities; and 1-8 WHEREAS, The brewery began production of Pearl Beer in 1886, 1-9 buying its recipe from the Kaiser-Bach Brewery of Bremen, Germany; 1-10 eight years after production, the Pearl Brewing Company had become 1-11 an overwhelming success and was one of the largest breweries in 1-12 Texas; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Pearl Beer's popularity peaked when Prohibition 1-14 ended in 1933; the company enjoyed phenomenal growth for many 1-15 decades, and over the years, it began to produce other goods, in 1-16 addition to its namesake product, such as, Lone Star beer, Colt 45 1-17 malt liquor, and Jax beer; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Prior to June, 2000, Pearl Brewing Company in San 1-19 Antonio was scheduled to close, as its parent company Pabst Brewery 1-20 found production at the Pearl Brewing plant to be prohibitively 1-21 expensive; upon reconsideration, however, a three-member board 1-22 allowed the company to continue production for an additional three 1-23 years; and 1-24 WHEREAS, As Pearl Beer is a Texas tradition and the company's 2-1 history an important chapter in Texas' past, the closing and 2-2 demolishing of the Pearl Brewing Company facilities would be a 2-3 significant loss to all Texans; and 2-4 WHEREAS, It is worthwhile for Texas to preserve and 2-5 commemorate the institutions that contributed richly to its history 2-6 and culture, and the facilities of the Pearl Brewing Company 2-7 qualify as worthy of preservation efforts; now, therefore, be it 2-8 RESOLVED, That the 77th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-9 hereby recognize the importance of the facilities of the Pearl 2-10 Brewing Company in San Antonio to Texas history and recommend that 2-11 the edifice be remodeled as the site of the state's official 2-12 Railroad and Transportation Museum so that it might be preserved; 2-13 and, be it further 2-14 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for 2-15 employees of the Pearl Brewing Company as an expression of high 2-16 regard from the Texas Legislature.
