1-1                        SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
 1-2           WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives and Senate are
 1-3     proud to honor the retired pilots of the Houston Ship Channel for
 1-4     their immeasurable contributions and exemplary record of service;
 1-5     and
 1-6           WHEREAS, Since the opening of the Houston Ship Channel,
 1-7     Houston Pilots have been responsible for safely guiding ships
 1-8     through the 50-mile course, considered by many to be the most
 1-9     difficult pilotage in the world because of its long, narrow
1-10     dimensions and heavy load of traffic; and
1-11           WHEREAS, In the organization's infancy, there were a handful
1-12     of pilots who were commissioned by the governor to serve as branch
1-13     pilots for the channel; over the years, that number has increased
1-14     and there are now more than 70 pilots serving the Port of Houston;
1-15     and
1-16           WHEREAS, During their years of service, the retired Houston
1-17     Pilots set standards of excellence for professional seamanship with
1-18     their superior navigational skills and vast knowledge of the
1-19     channel, ensuring the safe passage of countless ships from around
1-20     the world; and
1-21           WHEREAS, These retired pilots helped forge one of the finest
1-22     safety records in the nation for the Houston Ship Channel, and the
1-23     shipping industry has greatly benefited from their expertise; and
1-24           WHEREAS, Texas has reaped the benefits of these pilots'
1-25     skills and dedication, and it is fitting that they be honored for
 2-1     their remarkable service at this time; now, therefore, be it
 2-2           RESOLVED, That the 77th Legislature of the State of Texas
 2-3     hereby commend the retired Houston Pilots for their outstanding
 2-4     service to the Port of Houston, the State of Texas, and mariners
 2-5     around the world, and designate each of the following pilots as
