 1-1                        SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
 1-2           WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas joins the
 1-3     citizens of Tarrant County in mourning the loss of John V.
 1-4     McMillan, who died Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at the age of 87; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, Born in Omen, Texas, John McMillan studied
 1-6     accounting at Southwestern Business College in Houston; while a
 1-7     student, he worked with the A&P Grocery chain and later was
 1-8     promoted to a position of store manager in Port Arthur; he became a
 1-9     route salesman for Coca-Cola Bottling Company in Houston and went
1-10     on to become superintendent of the company's sub-operations located
1-11     in El Campo, Brenham, Huntsville, Bay City, and Eagle Lake; and
1-12           WHEREAS, From 1944 until 1952, Mr. McMillan owned restaurants
1-13     and convenience stores; in 1952, he sold his business interests to
1-14     accept the appointment as president and co-owner of Jax
1-15     Distributing Company of Dallas; after beer sales doubled, he was
1-16     awarded the Tarrant County territory in 1960; and
1-17           WHEREAS, An ingenious businessman with a wide range of
1-18     experience, John McMillan assumed the Coors Distributorship for
1-19     Tarrant County in 1966, and in 1974, he purchased his partner's
1-20     stock in the distributorship and became the sole owner of the
1-21     business; and
1-22           WHEREAS, Mr. McMillan was dedicated to his work as chairman
1-23     of the board of Coors Distributing Company of Tarrant County and
1-24     was past president of the Wholesale Beer Distributors of Texas and
 2-1     the North Fort Worth Business Association; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, An exemplary gentleman who distinguished himself in
 2-3     his career, John McMillan was respected for his many
 2-4     accomplishments and his leadership in the community; he had served
 2-5     on the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce Executive Committee and was
 2-6     past chairman of the chamber's Convention and Visitors Bureau; he
 2-7     was a member of the Tarrant County Convention Center Board of
 2-8     Directors and the Lions Club; and
 2-9           WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, and generosity, he
2-10     gave unselfishly of his time to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and
2-11     valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and
2-12           WHEREAS, John McMillan was devoted to his late wife, Katie C.
2-13     McMillan, and to his children and grandchildren, and he leaves
2-14     behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and
2-15     many friends; now, therefore, be it
2-16           RESOLVED, That the 77th Legislature of the State of Texas
2-17     hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of John V.
2-18     McMillan:  his daughter, Jeri McMillan; his grandsons, Larry,
2-19     Randy, Tim, and Danny Anfin; and his nine great-grandchildren; and,
2-20     be it further
2-21           RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for the
2-22     members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
2-23     Texas Legislature, and that when the Legislature adjourns this day,
2-24     it do so in memory of John McMillan.
