No. 64 2001S1489/2 1-1 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas is pleased to 1-3 recognize George Christian for his many years of outstanding work 1-4 as a writer and political consultant; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Born in Austin, Texas, George Christian served in 1-6 the United States Marine Corps during World War II in the Pacific 1-7 Theater; he graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a 1-8 degree in journalism; and 1-9 WHEREAS, George Christian began his career as a sports editor 1-10 and wire service reporter and went on to become chief of staff for 1-11 Governor Price Daniel and press secretary for Governor John B. 1-12 Connally; Mr. Christian's exceptional talent and expertise led to 1-13 his appointment as White House Press Secretary to President Lyndon 1-14 B. Johnson; and 1-15 WHEREAS, A man who has spent over 40 years building a 1-16 government relations career, Mr. Christian has been selected as a 1-17 distinguished alumnus of The University of Texas and as an 1-18 outstanding alumnus of The University of Texas College of 1-19 Communication; a centennial professorship in journalism has been 1-20 endowed in his name; and 1-21 WHEREAS, Mr. Christian currently serves as vice chairman of 1-22 the Lyndon Baines Johnson Foundation and is former chairman of the 1-23 Texas Historical Commission; he is a member of the boards of the 1-24 Headliners Foundation, McDonald Observatory, Scott and White 2-1 Memorial Hospital, and the Texas State Museum; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Throughout his long and distinguished career, Mr. 2-3 Christian has enjoyed the love and support of his wife, Jo Anne 2-4 Martin Christian, and his six children, and he is proud of his 11 2-5 grandchildren; and 2-6 WHEREAS, Dedicated to his family, his community, and his 2-7 state, Mr. Christian received the Harvey Penick Award for 2-8 Excellence in the Game of Life from Caritas of Austin and was named 2-9 Texan of the Year by the Texas Legislative Conference; and 2-10 WHEREAS, A highly respected professional whose work has 2-11 consistently demonstrated his commitment to integrity and 2-12 leadership, George Christian is an exemplary gentleman who has had 2-13 a positive impact on the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it 2-14 RESOLVED, That the 77th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-15 hereby commend George Christian for his lifetime of achievements in 2-16 the field of government relations and extend to him best wishes for 2-17 the future; and, be it further 2-18 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for him 2-19 as an expression of high regard from the Texas Legislature.
