1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1 1-3 WHEREAS, The Texas Senate is proud to pay tribute to the 1-4 Honorable Rick Perry, Governor of the State of Texas, who is 1-5 so richly deserving of the esteem and respect of the members 1-6 of this body; and 1-7 WHEREAS, Whether as lieutenant governor, state agriculture 1-8 commissioner, or state representative, Rick Perry has always been 1-9 noted for his honesty, his integrity, and his deep love of Texas; 1-10 and 1-11 WHEREAS, Elected lieutenant governor in 1998 on a platform of 1-12 juntos podemos, together we can, Rick Perry has extended the hand 1-13 of friendship across party lines to ensure a brighter future for 1-14 all Texans; and 1-15 WHEREAS, A fifth-generation Texan, Rick Perry was born in 1-16 Paint Rock, Texas; he attended Texas A&M University, where he 1-17 served in the Corps of Cadets and as a yell leader; the experience 1-18 he gained at Texas A&M would prove invaluable in his future 1-19 political career; and 1-20 WHEREAS, After graduating in 1972 with a degree in animal 1-21 science, he joined the United States Air Force, flying a C-130 2-1 until his honorable discharge four and one-half years later; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 2-3 1984, he quickly gained a reputation as an able and effective 2-4 legislator; he served with distinction on the powerful House 2-5 Appropriations and Calendars committees and was recognized as 2-6 one of the top legislators in Texas by the Dallas Morning News; and 2-7 WHEREAS, During his eight-year tenure as Texas Commissioner 2-8 of Agriculture, Governor Perry successfully promoted and expanded 2-9 markets for Texas agricultural products; an agribusinessman, he 2-10 intuitively understood the needs of Texas farmers and ranchers; and 2-11 WHEREAS, Throughout his distinguished career, Governor Perry's 2-12 first priority has always been the school children of Texas; the 2-13 initiator of the Master Reading Teacher program, which is designed 2-14 to ensure that the reading knowledge and skills of Texas 2-15 school children continue to grow throughout their public school 2-16 careers, he also helped ensure the passage of the franchise 2-17 tax credit for businesses that devoted some of their corporate 2-18 resources to help support before, after, and summer school 2-19 programs; and 2-20 WHEREAS, During the 76th Legislature, Governor Perry gained 2-21 broad based nonpartisan support for the Special Commission on 2-22 21st Century Colleges and Universities and the Advisory Council 2-23 on the Digital Economy, charged with helping keep Texas at the 2-24 edge of high-technology research, development, and job creation; 3-1 and 3-2 WHEREAS, A true family man, Rick is the loving husband of 3-3 Anita and the devoted father of Griffin and Sydney; and 3-4 WHEREAS, His honor is unchallenged and his promises are kept, 3-5 making Rick Perry a man justly to be praised; now, therefore, be it 3-6 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-7 77th Legislature, hereby commend Rick Perry for his exceptional 3-8 yeoman service on behalf of his fellow Texans and congratulate 3-9 him in his new position as Governor of Texas; and, be it further 3-10 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 3-11 Governor Perry as an expression of enduring friendship from the 3-12 Texas Senate. 3-13 Truan 3-14 Armbrister Gallegos Ogden 3-15 Barrientos Harris Shapiro 3-16 Bernsen Haywood Shapleigh 3-17 Bivins Jackson Sibley 3-18 Brown Lindsay Staples 3-19 Cain Lucio Van de Putte 3-20 Carona Madla Wentworth 3-21 Duncan Moncrief West 3-22 Ellis Nelson Whitmire 3-23 Fraser Zaffirini 3-24 Ratliff, President of the Senate 3-25 ______________________________________ 3-26 President of the Senate 3-27 I hereby certify that the above 3-28 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-29 on January 9, 2001. 3-30 ______________________________________ 3-31 Secretary of the Senate 3-32 ______________________________________ 4-1 Dean of the Senate
