 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 33
 1-3           WHEREAS, Today, there are approximately three million
 1-4     citizens in Texas who are 60 years of age and older who are
 1-5     continuing to help Texas grow and prosper, and it is projected
 1-6     that in 20 years that number will increase to more than five
 1-7     million Texans; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, Imparting their unique wisdom and knowledge,
 1-9     these senior citizens reflect the state's cultural, spiritual,
1-10     and ethnic diversity, and they have devoted their lives to making
1-11     Texas a better place in which to live, work, and raise families
1-12     while serving as teachers and role models for younger generations;
1-13     and
1-14           WHEREAS, Countless elderly Texans relish their role as
1-15     grandparents and mentors, instilling many of the same values
1-16     and principles in their grandchildren that were taught to them
1-17     by their parents and grandparents; and
1-18           WHEREAS, Helping to bridge the gap between past, present,
1-19     and future, senior citizens in Texas have made immeasurable
1-20     contributions in such important areas as education, industry,
 2-1     agriculture, space exploration, information technology, music,
 2-2     arts, and sports; furthermore, they have ably defended our nation's
 2-3     freedoms so that democracy could flourish in the United States; and
 2-4           WHEREAS, Throughout the years, Texas has reaped the
 2-5     benefits of the experience, vision, and leadership of our senior
 2-6     citizens, and it is most fitting to honor them for their numerous
 2-7     good works and deeds; now, therefore, be it
 2-8           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 2-9     77th Legislature, hereby recognize February 6, 2001, as Senior Day
2-10     in Texas and encourage Texans to observe and celebrate the
2-11     contributions of these treasured citizens with appropriate
2-12     ceremonies and festivities.
