 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 92
 1-3           WHEREAS, Marilyn Petersen has been chosen as a recipient
 1-4     of the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Awards, and the
 1-5     Texas Senate is proud to recognize her; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, For the first time, Texas is participating in the
 1-7     Milken Educator Awards program; established in 1985, the program
 1-8     has honored more than 1,600 talented educators; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Given to educators in recognition of their
1-10     exemplary leadership abilities, these awards acknowledge the
1-11     teachers' professional growth and achievements and their total
1-12     commitment to quality in education; and
1-13           WHEREAS, Mrs. Petersen is a teacher of mathematics at
1-14     La Porte Junior High School in the La Porte Independent School
1-15     District; she is the Mathematics Department Chair and Lead Teacher,
1-16     and she serves as a mentor for new and student teachers; and
1-17           WHEREAS, After earning her undergraduate degree in
1-18     elementary education from the University of Houston at Clear Lake,
1-19     Marilyn Petersen took a position with the La Porte Independent
1-20     School District; the second year she was transferred to a junior
1-21     high school and received a grant from Rice University to study
 2-1     mathematics; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, Since Mrs. Petersen began teaching mathematics at
 2-3     La Porte Junior High, test scores have risen, and now her school
 2-4     has the highest TAAS mathematics passing rate in a secondary
 2-5     school in the district; and
 2-6           WHEREAS, With a genuine commitment to education in
 2-7     mathematics, Marilyn Petersen participates in the "Rethinking
 2-8     Middle School Mathematics" grant program with mathematics
 2-9     teachers from 27 other schools; and
2-10           WHEREAS, A woman who tailors her lessons to suit her
2-11     students, Marilyn Petersen was honored in 1998-1999 when her
2-12     students wrote a letter to her principal listing her
2-13     accomplishments and asking him to give her a raise; she was
2-14     also selected District Secondary Teacher of the Year for
2-15     2000-2001 and Campus Teacher of the Year for 2000-2001; and
2-16           WHEREAS, Through her achievements and abilities,
2-17     Mrs. Petersen has contributed greatly to the educational
2-18     system of La Porte and the State of Texas; now, therefore,
2-19     be it
2-20           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-21     77th Legislature, hereby congratulate Marilyn Petersen
2-22     on being chosen a recipient of the Milken Family Foundation
2-23     National Educator Awards; and, be it further
 3-1           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 3-2     her as an expression of great good will from the Texas Senate.
