 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 100
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 1-4     recognize the Cotton Belt Railroad Depot in Grapevine on the grand
 1-5     occasion of its 100th birthday, which is being celebrated this year
 1-6     by area citizens; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, The Cotton Belt Railroad arrived in Grapevine in
 1-8     1888 and was responsible for much of the city's growth throughout
 1-9     the next century; the railway transported all kinds of freight to
1-10     Grapevine, such as tires and auto supplies, and the townspeople
1-11     befriended the railroad workers, bringing them food and comfort
1-12     when the trains derailed; and
1-13           WHEREAS, The Cotton Belt Railroad Depot was scheduled for
1-14     demolition after its closing in 1972, but it was saved by Grapevine
1-15     residents, and Alberta Nettleton and other members of a city garden
1-16     club converted it into a museum and restored it to its original
1-17     size; and
1-18           WHEREAS, Grapevine residents gathered together to celebrate
1-19     the depot's birthday and to visit with Edna Hemphill, who worked
1-20     for the Cotton Belt Railroad for 43 years and was the rail line's
 2-1     last Grapevine Station agent; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, City officials are planning monthly events
 2-3     throughout the year at the depot and will create a display about
 2-4     the year 1901 and a video about the depot's history; they will
 2-5     also host a children's art contest and a storytelling event; now,
 2-6     therefore, be it
 2-7           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 2-8     77th Legislature, hereby commend the residents of Grapevine on
 2-9     protecting and preserving this historical treasure and extend best
2-10     wishes to them on the occasion of the 100th birthday of the Cotton
2-11     Belt Railroad Depot; and, be it further
2-12           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-13     the depot as a memento of this event.
