 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 109
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Texas Senate takes pride in recognizing
 1-4     Dr. Areatha Simmons Jones, who is one of the outstanding
 1-5     women selected by the Epsilon Chapter of Eta Phi Beta Sorority,
 1-6     Incorporated, as an Unsung Hero; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, The Second Unsung Heroes Luncheon is being held on
 1-8     February 3, 2001, in Dallas to recognize noteworthy persons in
 1-9     the Metroplex area whose accomplishments have gone unnoticed; and
1-10           WHEREAS, A business and professional organization with
1-11     chapters in the United States and the United States Virgin Islands,
1-12     Eta Phi Beta was chartered in 1942 to encourage and support higher
1-13     scholastic standards, personal growth, career awareness, and
1-14     opportunities for community service; and
1-15           WHEREAS, Dr. Jones is well known for her 32 years of dedicated
1-16     service to the schoolchildren of Dallas; taking an exceptionally
1-17     active role as principal of R. L. Thornton Elementary School for
1-18     the last 10 years of her career, she is credited with its having
1-19     a reputation for academic excellence and laudable parent/community
1-20     involvement; and
1-21           WHEREAS, Dr. Jones has distinguished herself as a member
1-22     of the National Education Association, the National Council of
1-23     Teachers of English, Phi Delta Kappa, the International Reading
 2-1     Association, the National Council of Negro Women, and the Dallas
 2-2     Regional/National Alliance of Black School Educators; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, The recipient of the Mary McLeod Bethune Public
 2-4     Service Award, Dr. Jones currently sits on the board of trustees
 2-5     for Presbyterian Children's Homes and has the distinction of being
 2-6     the first and only African American chairman of the board in its
 2-7     99-year history; and
 2-8           WHEREAS, These women who have earned the title Unsung Hero
 2-9     are notable citizens in their communities, and their activities
2-10     have earned them the respect and admiration of their colleagues;
2-11     now, therefore, be it
2-12           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-13     77th Legislature, hereby commend and congratulate
2-14     Dr. Areatha Simmons Jones on her selection as one of the Unsung
2-15     Heroes by the Eta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, and wish her
2-16     well in the future; and, be it further
2-17           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
2-18     for Dr. Jones as an expression of highest regard from the
2-19     Texas Senate.
