1-1 ****** NEED TWO-PAGE HEADER ****** 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 113 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure in 1-4 recognizing Frances Roderick Axelson on her outstanding work as 1-5 a leading citizen of El Paso and as a philanthropist; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Frances Axelson was raised with a belief in giving 1-7 and helping others in need; her father, Dorrance D. Roderick, 1-8 established the Roderick Foundation, which is now an integral part 1-9 of the El Paso Community Foundation, where she has been active on 1-10 the board of directors for many years; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Mrs. Axelson began her career of service as a 1-12 Red Cross nurse's aide at both City County Hospital and 1-13 Southwestern General Hospital; she later became a Junior League 1-14 volunteer at Providence Memorial Hospital, where she continued 1-15 to contribute her time for 37 years; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Mrs. Axelson's favorite project is improving the 1-17 decorations and holiday lights in San Jacinto Plaza; she feels 1-18 that the downtown plaza is a focal point for the community, 1-19 particularly at Christmas time; and 1-20 WHEREAS, Known for her indomitable spirit, she looked for a 1-21 living Christmas tree for the plaza; it was donated in memory of 1-22 the late husband of Mrs. Corrine Boyce, and the beautiful tree 2-1 thrives in the middle of the plaza all year; and 2-2 WHEREAS, During the holiday season is when Mrs. Axelson's 2-3 gifts are truly visible; more than 21,000 feet of clear and gold 2-4 twinkling lights were purchased and more lighted figures and 2-5 features, a lighted, animated Santa's Express Train as well as a 2-6 lighted depot water tower were added; and 2-7 WHEREAS, Mrs. Axelson is a highly respected community leader 2-8 who has generously devoted time and energy to charitable 2-9 organizations, and her many worthy accomplishments reflect her 2-10 dedication and her commitment to her fellowman; now, therefore, 2-11 be it 2-12 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-13 77th Legislature, hereby commend Frances Roderick Axelson on 2-14 her philanthropic gestures and contributions to the citizens of 2-15 El Paso and the State of Texas; and, be it further 2-16 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her 2-17 as a token of esteem from the Texas Senate. 2-18 Shapleigh 2-19 ______________________________________ 2-20 President of the Senate 2-21 I hereby certify that the above 2-22 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-23 on January 29, 2001. 2-24 ______________________________________ 2-25 Secretary of the Senate 2-26 ______________________________________ 2-27 Member, Texas Senate
