1-1 ****** NEED TWO-PAGE HEADER ****** 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 120 1-3 WHEREAS, The Texas Senate takes pride in recognizing 1-4 Osceola Mays, who is one of the outstanding women selected by 1-5 the Epsilon Chapter of Eta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, 1-6 as an Unsung Hero; and 1-7 WHEREAS, The Second Unsung Heroes Luncheon is being held on 1-8 February 3, 2001, in Dallas to recognize noteworthy persons in 1-9 the Metroplex area whose accomplishments have gone unnoticed; and 1-10 WHEREAS, A business and professional organization with 1-11 chapters in the United States and the United States Virgin Islands, 1-12 Eta Phi Beta was chartered in 1942 to encourage and support higher 1-13 scholastic standards, personal growth, career awareness, and 1-14 opportunities for community service; and 1-15 WHEREAS, The daughter of a sharecropper and the 1-16 granddaughter of slaves, Osceola Mays has a natural gift for 1-17 remembering poems and songs, including those taught to her by 1-18 her mother and grandmother, and her book entitled Osceola--Memories 1-19 of a Sharecropper's Daughter is educational and inspiring to people 1-20 of all ages; and 1-21 WHEREAS, As a recognized oratorical historian, Mrs. Mays 1-22 has performed in numerous programs at the Dallas Folk Festival, 2-1 at schools and churches, and at the Dallas Black Academy of Arts 2-2 and Letters; she participated in a three-week touring program 2-3 called Texas in Paris, which was presented at the Centro Flog 2-4 in Florence, Italy, and the Maison Des Cultures du Monde in 2-5 Paris, France; and 2-6 WHEREAS, The women who earn the title of Unsung Hero are 2-7 notable citizens in their communities, and their activities have 2-8 earned them the respect and admiration of their colleagues; now, 2-9 therefore, be it 2-10 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-11 77th Legislature, hereby commend and congratulate Osceola Mays 2-12 on her selection as one of the Unsung Heroes by the Eta Phi Beta 2-13 Sorority, Incorporated, and wish her well in the future; and, be 2-14 it further 2-15 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-16 her as an expression of highest regard from the Texas Senate. 2-17 West 2-18 ______________________________________ 2-19 President of the Senate 2-20 I hereby certify that the above 2-21 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-22 on January 29, 2001. 2-23 ______________________________________ 2-24 Secretary of the Senate 2-25 ______________________________________ 2-26 Member, Texas Senate
