1-1 ****** NEED TWO-PAGE HEADER ****** 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 125 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas recognizes that 1-4 colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death 1-5 among men and women in the United States; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Thousands of families have suffered devastating 1-7 loss because of this disease, and many more will; the American 1-8 Cancer Society estimates that 56,300 people will die from 1-9 colorectal cancer this year; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Colorectal cancer is highly detectable and, if 1-11 found early, is treatable; over 90 percent of those who receive 1-12 an early diagnosis and treatment will survive more than five 1-13 years; sadly, only 37 percent of colorectal cancers are detected 1-14 while still localized; and 1-15 WHEREAS, One of the strongest weapons in the fight against 1-16 colorectal cancer is early detection; people who have a history 1-17 of the disease in their family are urged to have regular 1-18 colonoscopies; those who do so put themselves at a distinct 1-19 advantage in their fight against colorectal cancer; and 1-20 WHEREAS, By designating the month of March, 2001, as 2-1 Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, health officials hope to 2-2 encourage all Texans to be proactive in their efforts to protect 2-3 themselves from this dread disease; now, therefore, be it 2-4 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-5 77th Legislature, hereby designate March, 2001, as Colorectal 2-6 Cancer Awareness Month in the State of Texas; and, be it further 2-7 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared to 2-8 inform all Texans of this critical public health issue. 2-9 Moncrief 2-10 ______________________________________ 2-11 President of the Senate 2-12 I hereby certify that the above 2-13 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-14 on January 29, 2001. 2-15 ______________________________________ 2-16 Secretary of the Senate 2-17 ______________________________________ 2-18 Member, Texas Senate
