1-1 ****** NEED TWO-PAGE HEADER ****** 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 144 1-3 In Memory 1-4 of 1-5 John C. Varner 1-6 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the 1-7 citizens of Houston in mourning the loss of a beloved citizen, 1-8 John C. "Sonny" Varner, who died June 23, 2000; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Born December 24, 1932, in Brookshire, Texas, 1-10 Sonny was the son of Ollie and Willie Mae Varner; he attended 1-11 schools in both Brookshire and Houston; and 1-12 WHEREAS, Sonny served his country valiantly as a member 1-13 of the United States Army from 1952 to 1954; he received the 1-14 National Defense Service Medal and was honorably discharged; and 1-15 WHEREAS, A deeply spiritual person, Sonny attended church 1-16 from an early age and was known by members of his community as a 1-17 man who steadfastly adhered to life-affirming values; and 1-18 WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, and generosity, 1-19 Sonny gave unselfishly of his time to others, and his wisdom, 2-1 warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten; he leaves behind 2-2 memories that will be treasured forever by his family and many 2-3 friends; now, therefore, be it 2-4 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-5 77th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the 2-6 family of John C. Varner: his mother, Willie Mae Varner; his 2-7 sister, Martha Varner Jenkins; and his son, Kenneth Wayne; and, 2-8 be it further 2-9 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his 2-10 family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, 2-11 and that when the Senate adjourns on this day, it do so in memory 2-12 of John C.
