1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 161 1-3 WHEREAS, Southwest High School of Houston is rendering an 1-4 important service to its students and to the larger community by 1-5 providing an excellent secondary education within an environment 1-6 that fosters success; and 1-7 WHEREAS, A good education helps prepare students to meet 1-8 the challenges ahead, enabling them to become productive citizens 1-9 of this dynamic, ever-changing world; the State of Texas recognizes 1-10 the potential of its citizens as a vital community resource and is 1-11 dedicated to providing them with a quality education; and 1-12 WHEREAS, Southwest High School has received a charter 1-13 from the State of Texas to operate as a free and independent 1-14 public school, one that adheres to all state mandates and offers 1-15 state-approved curricula and textbooks; and 1-16 WHEREAS, The primary mission of this school is to provide 1-17 a choice in regard to the sort of secondary education students 1-18 receive; Southwest seeks to give its students the benefits of a 1-19 traditional curriculum, enhanced by smaller teacher-to-student 1-20 ratios and more individualized attention; and 1-21 WHEREAS, The staff of Southwest High School is committed to 1-22 engaging students from different cultures, who bring a wide range 1-23 of interests, talents, and proficiencies; faculty members encourage 1-24 students to assume leadership roles and work with them to develop 2-1 values and skills that will serve them throughout their lives; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Southwest encourages parents to become partners 2-3 with teachers and administrators in making decisions about their 2-4 children's education; the school also encourages support from the 2-5 business community and provides a variety of opportunities through 2-6 which it can become involved; and 2-7 WHEREAS, The students and staff of this fine school can 2-8 take pride in the tremendous work they are accomplishing and in the 2-9 foundation they are laying for future success, and it is truly a 2-10 pleasure to honor them at this time; now, therefore, be it 2-11 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-12 77th Legislature, hereby commend Southwest High School and its 2-13 students for all they have achieved in the past year and extend 2-14 to them sincere best wishes for success in their future endeavors; 2-15 and, be it further 2-16 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be 2-17 prepared for Southwest High School as an expression of high regard 2-18 from the Texas Senate. 2-19 Jackson 2-20 ______________________________________ 2-21 President of the Senate 2-22 I hereby certify that the above 2-23 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-24 on February 1, 2001. 2-25 ______________________________________ 2-26 Secretary of the Senate 2-27 ______________________________________ 2-28 Member, Texas Senate
