1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 164 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is extremely proud 1-4 to recognize Texas Woman's University for providing 100 years of 1-5 superior education to students throughout the state, the nation, 1-6 and the world; and 1-7 WHEREAS, Created by an act of the 27th Legislature in 1901, 1-8 the school opened its doors to 186 enrollees as the Girls 1-9 Industrial College; after several name changes, the school became 1-10 Texas Woman's University in 1957; current enrollment is more than 1-11 8,400 and is comprised of students from 176 Texas counties, 1-12 41 additional states, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and 1-13 50 foreign countries; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Today, Texas Woman's University offers 106 1-15 undergraduate degrees, 105 graduate programs, and 23 doctoral 1-16 fields; some of its nationally recognized programs include 1-17 occupational therapy, physical therapy, library science, and 1-18 dance; the university has awarded 71,881 degrees in its 100 years 1-19 of academic excellence and has produced more health care 1-20 professionals than any other institution in the state; and 1-21 WHEREAS, Expanding its educational horizons through 1-22 technologic advances has allowed the university to offer 2-1 post-graduate degrees through distance learning; this vision 2-2 and dedication by the administration have enabled countless 2-3 students to achieve their academic goals; and 2-4 WHEREAS, It is the commitment of Texas Woman's University 2-5 to thoroughly prepare its students for a highly competitive and 2-6 complex world; instilling leadership skills through extracurricular 2-7 activities has aided in this commitment and brought this 2-8 institution of higher learning numerous honors and distinctions; 2-9 and 2-10 WHEREAS, Housed in the main library of Texas Woman's 2-11 University is an extensive collection on the history of women; 2-12 books, periodicals, manuscripts, photographs, and other materials 2-13 have been amassed to document the role of women in the annals of 2-14 this country's history; and 2-15 WHEREAS, The university is fortunate to have on its campus 2-16 one of the top 20 outstanding architectural accomplishments in 2-17 Texas, the Little Chapel-in-the-Woods; the masterpiece was designed 2-18 and artfully decorated by more than 300 students and was dedicated 2-19 by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt on November 1, 1939; and 2-20 WHEREAS, Texas Woman's University mascot, Pioneer, 2-21 symbolizes not only the institution's spirit but also its 2-22 continued commitment to excellence; the success of this 2-23 university is the result of a united effort by many resourceful 2-24 and devoted individuals, and all who have participated in the 3-1 founding and preservation of this great institution deserve to be 3-2 proud of their accomplishments; now, therefore, be it 3-3 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-4 77th Legislature, hereby express appreciation to Texas Woman's 3-5 University for providing an outstanding educational environment 3-6 for the past 100 years; and, be it further 3-7 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 3-8 Texas Woman's University as an expression of high regard from the 3-9 Texas Senate. 3-10 Sibley 3-11 Armbrister Gallegos Ogden 3-12 Barrientos Harris Shapiro 3-13 Bernsen Haywood Shapleigh 3-14 Bivins Jackson Staples 3-15 Brown Lindsay Truan 3-16 Cain Lucio Van de Putte 3-17 Carona Madla Wentworth 3-18 Duncan Moncrief West 3-19 Ellis Nelson Whitmire 3-20 Fraser Zaffirini 3-21 Ratliff, President of the Senate 3-22 ______________________________________ 3-23 President of the Senate 3-24 I hereby certify that the above 3-25 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-26 on February 6, 2001. 3-27 ______________________________________ 3-28 Secretary of the Senate 3-29 ______________________________________ 3-30 Member, Texas Senate
