1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 170 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas proudly joins the 1-4 citizens of Balch Springs in celebrating the contributions their 1-5 city has made to Texas on Balch Springs Day at the State Capitol 1-6 on February 6, 2001; and 1-7 WHEREAS, Balch Springs was born in 1877, when John Balch 1-8 brought his family to settle in North Texas; Mr. Balch bricked 1-9 up one of three freshwater springs on his property, thereby 1-10 ensuring the area a constant supply of fresh water; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Settlers soon began gathering near the area to 1-12 collect water during the hot, dry summers, and before long, a 1-13 community formed and was named for Mr. Balch's spring; and 1-14 WHEREAS, John Balch, a veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto, 1-15 gave his community more than one distinction; Balch Springs is 1-16 the only city in Dallas County that is named for a veteran of 1-17 that historic conflict; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Incorporated on June 13, 1953, Balch Springs 1-19 continues to be an exceptional place to live; community-minded 1-20 citizens dedicate themselves to quality-of-life issues, ensuring 1-21 that area residents can enjoy abundant trees and public parks; and 2-1 WHEREAS, Though citizens of Balch Springs work hard to 2-2 maintain their community's small-town charm, they also believe 2-3 in promoting structured economic development; with the help of 2-4 the local chamber of commerce, Balch Springs city leaders have 2-5 successfully attracted many new businesses and industries to the 2-6 area; and 2-7 WHEREAS, Citizens of Balch Springs are an active people, 2-8 who love those most traditional Texas pastimes, horseback riding 2-9 and rodeo, and the city offers several excellent venues, including 2-10 the nationally recognized Mesquite Rodeo and the Balch Springs 2-11 Saddle Club; and 2-12 WHEREAS, Balch Springs is also able to offer its young 2-13 citizens exceptional educational opportunities; served by the 2-14 Dallas and Mesquite Independent School Districts, the area boasts 2-15 outstanding schools; and 2-16 WHEREAS, The people of Balch Springs are justifiably proud 2-17 of their city; a historic Texas community whose residents are 2-18 working to preserve their rich past and to create a bright 2-19 future, Balch Springs greatly deserves a day of recognition at 2-20 the State Capitol; now, therefore, be it 2-21 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-22 77th Legislature, hereby express its appreciation to the people 2-23 of Balch Springs for the many rich contributions they have made 2-24 to Texas and extend best wishes to them for a successful event 3-1 in Austin; and, be it further 3-2 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 3-3 residents of Balch Springs as a memento of this jubilant occasion. 3-4 Cain 3-5 Carona 3-6 Armbrister Haywood Shapiro 3-7 Barrientos Jackson Shapleigh 3-8 Bernsen Lindsay Sibley 3-9 Bivins Lucio Staples 3-10 Brown Madla Truan 3-11 Duncan Moncrief Van de Putte 3-12 Ellis Nelson Wentworth 3-13 Fraser Ogden West 3-14 Gallegos Whitmire 3-15 Harris Zaffirini 3-16 Ratliff, President of the Senate 3-17 ______________________________________ 3-18 President of the Senate 3-19 I hereby certify that the above 3-20 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-21 on February 6, 2001. 3-22 ______________________________________ 3-23 Secretary of the Senate 3-24 ______________________________________ 3-25 Member, Texas Senate 3-26 ______________________________________ 3-27 Member, Texas Senate
