1-1 ****** NEED TWO-PAGE HEADER ****** 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 178 1-3 WHEREAS, History remembers because there has been someone 1-4 with a sure ear and quick hand to write it down; history, in 1-5 its purest, most objective form has the court reporter to thank 1-6 for the complete, uninterpreted record; and 1-7 WHEREAS, In ancient times the recorder began this noble 1-8 profession as a scribe, writing down the events of ancient 1-9 Greece, Judea, Persia, and the Roman Empire; the first shorthand 1-10 reporter on record has been identified as Marcus Tullius Tiro in 1-11 63 B.C.; Tiro became Cicero's secretary and used a metal stylus 1-12 and wax-covered tablets to record the speeches of Cato; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Many notable events have been witnessed and 1-14 recorded by shorthand reporters, such as the debates of the 1-15 First Congress of the United States, the Nuremburg Trials, 1-16 the proceedings of the Warren Commission, the Watergate 1-17 hearings, the Lindbergh kidnapping trials, and the death of 1-18 Abraham Lincoln; and 1-19 WHEREAS, Charles Dickens, himself a parliamentary court 1-20 reporter, had his character David Copperfield observe that 2-1 shorthand "was about equal to the mastery of six languages"; 2-2 and 2-3 WHEREAS, From stylus to computer, the history of court 2-4 reporting mirrors the history of civilization; much of what 2-5 we know of history is owed to the reporters of the time; now, 2-6 therefore, be it 2-7 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-8 77th Legislature, hereby recognize February 5, 2001, as 2-9 Court Reporter Day at the State Capitol and encourage all 2-10 Texans to celebrate the contributions of the 3,097 certified 2-11 court reporters in Texas. 2-12 Harris 2-13 ______________________________________ 2-14 President of the Senate 2-15 I hereby certify that the above 2-16 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-17 on February 5, 2001. 2-18 ______________________________________ 2-19 Secretary of the Senate 2-20 ______________________________________ 2-21 Member, Texas Senate
