1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 179 1-3 WHEREAS, Texans place great value in the importance of 1-4 education, for the future of the Lone Star State lies in the 1-5 hands of our children, and they must be fully equipped with the 1-6 skills needed to successfully meet the challenges that lie ahead 1-7 in the 21st Century; and 1-8 WHEREAS, Such success would not be possible without the 1-9 commitment and enthusiasm exhibited by teachers such as the 1-10 2001 honorees for the Texas Excellence Awards for Outstanding 1-11 Teachers; and 1-12 WHEREAS, These fine educators include three recipients of 1-13 the Lillian B. Rhodes Teaching Award: Wilma Hill of Lamar 1-14 High School in Arlington, Dena Johnson of Cypress Falls High 1-15 School in Houston, and Michael O'Hern of Lake Highlands High 1-16 School in Dallas; three recipients of the Bernard and 1-17 Audre Rapoport Teaching Award: Karla Boone of Junction High 1-18 School in Junction, Hugh Franks of Midland Senior High School 1-19 in Midland, and Melvin Myers of Barbara Jordan High School for 1-20 Careers in Houston; the Glaxo Teaching Award recipient, 1-21 Leslie Bishop of Sandra Day O'Connor High School in Helotes; 1-22 the Gordon Appleman Teaching Award recipient, Johnnie Eng of 2-1 Alamo Heights High School in San Antonio; the Houston Texas 2-2 Exes Teaching Award recipient, Maria Garcia-Rameau of Scarborough 2-3 High School in Houston; the Mrs. Harold Myers Teaching Award 2-4 recipient, John Martinez of San Marcos High School in San Marcos; 2-5 the Verna Rogers Teaching Award recipient, Janice R. Lowry of Metz 2-6 Elementary in Austin; and the Carolyn and Mario Benitez Teacher 2-7 Award recipient, Nelda B. Sanders of North Oaks Elementary School 2-8 in Austin; and 2-9 WHEREAS, All are highly regarded professionals who have 2-10 earned recognition from their peers for their proven ability 2-11 to motivate students, their instructional expertise, and their 2-12 cooperative manner in working with their colleagues and members 2-13 of the administration; and 2-14 WHEREAS, Nominated by their principals, this year's honorees 2-15 were selected from a large and talented field of entrants, and 2-16 their receipt of this prestigious honor entitled them to attend 2-17 the 2001 Conference on Texas Excellence on Education held at 2-18 The University of Texas at Austin, where they were presented with 2-19 both a cash award of $1,000 and a specially commissioned bronze 2-20 sculpture; and 2-21 WHEREAS, Now in its 15th year, the Texas Excellence Awards 2-22 program is jointly presented by the College of Education and 2-23 the Ex-Students' Association of The University of Texas at Austin; 2-24 as a recipient of a Texas Excellence Award, each of these educators 3-1 has achieved a rare distinction that is truly deserving of special 3-2 legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it 3-3 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-4 77th Legislature, hereby commend the recipients of the 2001 3-5 Texas Excellence Awards for Outstanding Teachers and extend 3-6 to them sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness 3-7 in the years to come; and, be it further 3-8 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be 3-9 prepared for these dedicated teachers as an expression of 3-10 high regard from the Texas Senate. 3-11 Barrientos 3-12 ______________________________________ 3-13 President of the Senate 3-14 I hereby certify that the above 3-15 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-16 on February 5, 2001. 3-17 ______________________________________ 3-18 Secretary of the Senate 3-19 ______________________________________ 3-20 Member, Texas Senate
