1-1 ****** NEED TWO-PAGE HEADER ****** 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 202 1-3 WHEREAS, The Texas Senate is proud to join the citizens of 1-4 Dallas in observing D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) Dallas 1-5 during the Dallas Independent School District's most recent 1-6 literacy campaign; and 1-7 WHEREAS, An innovative approach to encouraging our children 1-8 to read, the D.E.A.R. Dallas project is participating in the 1-9 National Education Association's Read Across America program; and 1-10 WHEREAS, For children in today's society to learn the value 1-11 of reading, they must see adults modeling the literacy habits our 1-12 children are to adopt; if a child hears that reading is valuable, 1-13 yet sees no adults enjoying the written word, the child doubts the 1-14 worth of reading; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Devoted to the goal of increasing literacy, the 1-16 Classroom Teachers of Dallas, the local affiliate of the National 1-17 Education Association, has dedicated this year to celebrating the 1-18 97th birthday of the late Dr. Seuss on March 2, 2001, the same day 1-19 designated by D.E.A.R. Dallas to Drop Everything And Read; and 1-20 WHEREAS, The book selected this year by Read Across America 2-1 is Oh, the Places You'll Go, the greatly loved 1990 book by 2-2 Dr. Seuss; this National Education Association's program is in its 2-3 fourth consecutive year, and it has been resoundingly successful; 2-4 and 2-5 WHEREAS, On March 2, 2001, the Dallas public schools will 2-6 Drop Everything And Read, and the Texas Senate heartily endorses 2-7 this worthwhile plan; now, therefore, be it 2-8 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-9 77th Legislature, hereby congratulate D.E.A.R.
