1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 203 1-3 In Memory 1-4 of 1-5 Fred Leonard Lander, III 1-6 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the 1-7 citizens of Dallas in mourning the loss of one of its most esteemed 1-8 and well-loved citizens, Fred Leonard Lander, III, who died 1-9 February 2, 2001, at the age of 73; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Born April 19, 1927, Fred graduated from 1-11 Dunbar High School and went on to attend Howard University in 1-12 Washington, D.C., earning his bachelor of arts degree; he earned 1-13 his law degree from Howard University in 1952; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Fred served his country faithfully during the 1-15 Korean War as a member of the United States Army; following the 1-16 war he held several positions in Washington, D.C., and worked as 1-17 a revenue officer for the Internal Revenue Service and as a systems 1-18 analyst for the Federal Power Commission; and 1-19 WHEREAS, He moved to Dallas in 1972 and worked for the 1-20 United States Department of Justice and for the Equal Opportunity 1-21 Commission; in 1987, he began a private practice, Lander Associates; 2-1 starting in 1994, Fred began work as a part-time City Administrative 2-2 Law Judge for the City of Dallas; and 2-3 WHEREAS, An extremely able attorney, Fred was licensed to 2-4 practice before the Supreme Court of the United States; he was the 2-5 recipient of numerous professional distinctions including the Equal 2-6 Employment Opportunity Commission's Meritorious Performer Award, 2-7 the C. B. Bunkley Legal Service Award, and the Dallas-Fort Worth 2-8 Government Employee's Honorary Accomplishment Award; and 2-9 WHEREAS, Fred was a member of several professional 2-10 organizations including the J. L. Turner Legal Society, the 2-11 State Bar of Texas, and the Texas Trial Lawyers Association; and 2-12 WHEREAS, Dedicated to his community, Fred gave generously 2-13 of his time and talent to several civic and philanthropic 2-14 organizations; a member of the Kiwanis Club of Dallas, he was a 2-15 former board member of the Dallas Urban League and a past member 2-16 of the Citizens Police Review Board of Dallas; and 2-17 WHEREAS, The trusted friend and respected colleague of 2-18 many, Fred will be dearly missed by the Dallas community; a man 2-19 of integrity, strength, and generosity, he gave unselfishly of 2-20 his time to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel 2-21 will not be forgotten by those who knew him; now, therefore, be it 2-22 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-23 77th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the family 2-24 of Fred Leonard Lander, III: his wife, Bobbie Lander; and his sons, 3-1 Fred L. Lander, IV, and C.
