1-1 ****** NEED TWO-PAGE HEADER ****** 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 206 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in 1-4 recognizing Wednesday, February 14, 2001, as Congenital Heart 1-5 Defect Awareness Day in the State of Texas; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Each year, over 32,000 babies are born in the 1-7 United States with varying degrees of malformed heart structure 1-8 and blood vessel imperfections; it is believed to be the number 1-9 one birth defect and affects one out of every 100 children born; 1-10 and 1-11 WHEREAS, Heart defects are also considered to be the 1-12 leading cause of birth defect-related deaths; yet, through early 1-13 detection and treatment, over one million survivors with over 35 1-14 different forms of congenital heart defects are alive today; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Over the past 40 years, dramatic increases have 1-16 been made in the survival rate for children but much more needs 1-17 to be done; information dissemination, additional research 1-18 funding, support groups, and organ donations are all key issues 1-19 that need to be emphasized in this battle to curb these 1-20 debilitating birth defects; and 2-1 WHEREAS, Due to the efforts of families and volunteers 2-2 who dedicate their time and energy to supporting the research, 2-3 education programs, and advocacy efforts, the percentage of 2-4 deaths due to congenital heart defects in the United States 2-5 dropped 26 percent from 1984 to 1994; now, therefore, be it 2-6 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-7 77th Legislature, hereby declare that February 14, 2001, be 2-8 recognized as Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Day in the 2-9 State of Texas and encourage all Texans to participate in its 2-10 observance. 2-11 Moncrief 2-12 ______________________________________ 2-13 President of the Senate 2-14 I hereby certify that the above 2-15 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-16 on February 14, 2001. 2-17 ______________________________________ 2-18 Secretary of the Senate 2-19 ______________________________________ 2-20 Member, Texas Senate
