1-1 ****** NEED TWO-PAGE HEADER ****** 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 217 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in 1-4 recognizing Herman Spertus on the joyous occasion of his 100th 1-5 birthday on March 10, 2001; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Born March 10, 1901, in Czarist Russia, 1-7 Herman Spertus attended a university in Kiev during the Russian 1-8 Revolution; in 1923, he and his brother fled from Russia and 1-9 immigrated to America, "The Land of Opportunity"; and 1-10 WHEREAS, The two brothers worked as factory laborers 1-11 before founding a manufacturing company; their company became the 1-12 world's largest manufacturer of picture frames and employed more 1-13 than 2,000 people; and 1-14 WHEREAS, In addition to establishing his successful 1-15 company, Mr. Spertus founded the Spertus Institute of Jewish 1-16 Studies in Chicago and became involved in numerous philanthropic 1-17 activities; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Mr. Spertus has been the recipient of a number of 1-19 awards, including the Chicago Horatio Alger Award and the Rosenwald 1-20 Award, which is presented to an outstanding Jewish Chicagoan each 1-21 year by the Jewish Federation of Chicago; and 1-22 WHEREAS, At the age of 100, Mr. Spertus has been privileged 2-1 to witness events most of us only read about in history books; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Today, he enjoys reminiscing and takes pleasure 2-3 in the companionship of his friends and family; he and his late 2-4 wife, Sarah, were blessed with five children, and he now has 13 2-5 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; he and his wife, 2-6 Hilda Spertus, share a loving and rich relationship; and 2-7 WHEREAS, A beloved and respected member of his community, 2-8 Mr. Spertus is noted for his courage, his compassion for others, 2-9 and his enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest; now, 2-10 therefore, be it 2-11 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-12 77th Legislature, hereby join the family and friends of 2-13 Herman Spertus in extending best wishes to him and congratulations 2-14 on the grand occasion of his 100th birthday; and, be it further 2-15 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-16 him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. 2-17 Barrientos 2-18 ______________________________________ 2-19 President of the Senate 2-20 I hereby certify that the above 2-21 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-22 on February 12, 2001. 2-23 ______________________________________ 2-24 Secretary of the Senate 2-25 ______________________________________ 2-26 Member, Texas Senate
