 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 218
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to join
 1-4     the citizens of Caldwell County in celebrating February 21, 2001,
 1-5     as Caldwell County Day at the State Capitol; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, Created from Bastrop and Gonzales counties in
 1-7     1848, Caldwell County was named after Mathew Caldwell who commanded
 1-8     the Gonzales volunteers in the last Comanche uprising at the Battle
 1-9     of Plum Creek; and
1-10           WHEREAS, At the close of the War Between the States, the
1-11     returning soldiers were drawn to cattle raising, resulting in
1-12     thousands of head being shipped northward; trail heads throughout
1-13     the county, including the famous Chisholm Trail, were heavily
1-14     traveled between 1870 and 1890 and forged a way of life that, to
1-15     this day, is vital to the economic well-being of the area; and
1-16           WHEREAS, With the discovery of new strains of cotton that
1-17     could thrive in the varied soils of Caldwell County, A. D. Mebane
1-18     made cotton king in the county; cattle and cotton were the mainstays
1-19     until the economic face expanded with the discovery of oil in the
1-20     Prairie Lea/Luling area; and
1-21           WHEREAS, Glimpses of the county's rich heritage can be
1-22     seen in the carefully preserved oldest Episcopal church built in
1-23     1856, the oldest continuously operating library opened in 1900,
 2-1     and the beautifully refurbished courthouse built in 1894; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, Noted for its wonderful recreational areas and
 2-3     its celebrations, the Bar-B-Que Capital of Texas beckons visitors
 2-4     to enjoy Lockhart State Park, the Luling Watermelon Thump, and the
 2-5     Chisholm Trail Roundup; and
 2-6           WHEREAS, Caldwell County Day at the State Capitol is an
 2-7     appropriate occasion for the Texas Senate to recognize the
 2-8     residents of Caldwell County and commend them for their many
 2-9     contributions to making our state great; now, therefore, be it
2-10           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-11     77th Legislature, hereby extend warmest wishes to the citizens of
2-12     Caldwell County for a most memorable celebration of Caldwell County
2-13     Day at the State Capitol on February 21, 2001; and, be it further
2-14           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
2-15     for Caldwell County as a memento of this notable day and as an
2-16     expression of admiration from the Texas Senate.
