1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 222 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great 1-4 pleasure in recognizing February 13, 2001, as Community 1-5 Development Day at the State Capitol; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Community development corporations are sometimes 1-7 the only organizations in their community helping the poorest of 1-8 working families in obtaining safe, decent, and sanitary housing, 1-9 working to improve the physical condition of commercial buildings 1-10 and infrastructure in poor and minority neighborhoods; and giving 1-11 alternative financing options to families and small businesses that 1-12 cannot get traditional bank loans; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Founded in 1995, the Texas Association of Community 1-14 Development Corporations is a nonprofit organization of more than 1-15 450 community development corporations, committed to promoting 1-16 affordable housing and economic development in Texas; and 1-17 WHEREAS, The Texas Association of Community Development 1-18 Corporations is celebrating its Fifth Annual Community Development 1-19 Conference in Austin February 12 through 14, 2001; it is the 1-20 largest gathering of community development practitioners in the 1-21 state; and 2-1 WHEREAS, Today, Tuesday, February 13, 2001, community 2-2 development practitioners from across Texas will visit the 2-3 Capitol and meet with their respective legislators to discuss 2-4 the importance of affordable housing and economic development 2-5 in Texas; and 2-6 WHEREAS, Texas community development corporations have 2-7 produced over 24,500 units of owner-occupied housing and rental 2-8 housing in their history through 1999, and they have a projected 2-9 11,243 housing units under construction or planned for 2000-2001; 2-10 and 2-11 WHEREAS, Community lenders called community development 2-12 finance institutions have stimulated economic development in 2-13 low-income communities, directing over $60.5 million dollars 2-14 to 1,912 local firms or individuals starting an enterprise from 2-15 1994-1999; and 2-16 WHEREAS, The majority of community development corporations 2-17 provide a comprehensive set of services for Texas communities, 2-18 such as housing and commercial and business development, as well 2-19 as youth programs, employment training, and childcare services; 2-20 now, therefore, be it 2-21 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-22 77th Legislature, hereby recognize February 13, 2001, as Texas 2-23 Community Development Day at the Capitol and extend sincere best 2-24 wishes for continued success to all association members; and, be 3-1 it further 3-2 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be 3-3 prepared for the Texas Association of Community Development 3-4 Corporations as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate. 3-5 Madla 3-6 ______________________________________ 3-7 President of the Senate 3-8 I hereby certify that the above 3-9 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-10 on February 13, 2001. 3-11 ______________________________________ 3-12 Secretary of the Senate 3-13 ______________________________________ 3-14 Member, Texas Senate
