1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 237 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in the 1-4 League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Council No. 1, 1-5 founded on February 17, 1929, in the City of Corpus Christi, by 1-6 individuals of vision and determination; their goal was to improve 1-7 the lives of Hispanic citizens and to find solutions to problems 1-8 in the fields of civil rights, education, and government; and 1-9 WHEREAS, LULAC Council No. 1 was created through the 1-10 collaborative efforts of three pre-existing organizations: the 1-11 Order of the Sons of America, the Knights of America, and the 1-12 League of Latin American Citizens; and 1-13 WHEREAS, LULAC Council No. 1 has provided outstanding 1-14 leadership, motivation, and inspiration to make LULAC the 1-15 exceptional organization that it is today, and it has positively 1-16 influenced major policy decisions that have bettered the lives 1-17 of countless Hispanic individuals; and 1-18 WHEREAS, LULAC Council No. 1 contributions to the community 1-19 have included the establishment of Citizenship Classes, Headstart 1-20 Program, Housing for the Low and Moderate Income, Housing for the 1-21 Elderly, Programs for the Elderly, SER/Jobs for Progress, LULAC 1-22 Service Centers, Parents Association for Drug Rehabilitation and 2-1 Educational Service, and Veterans Outreach Program; and 2-2 WHEREAS, LULAC Council No. 1 has awarded hundreds of thousands 2-3 of dollars in scholarships through fundraising efforts such as 2-4 the annual Feria de las Flores, initiated by Joe Flores in 1959; 2-5 through music, dance, and costumes, young ladies vying for the 2-6 title of Feria de las Flores Queen allows the community to share 2-7 in the rich and beautiful Mexican heritage; and 2-8 WHEREAS, LULAC Council No. 1 is honoring its prominent 2-9 community leaders at the LULAC "Outstanding Community Leaders" 2-10 Banquet on Friday, February 16, 2001, at the Corpus Christi Omni 2-11 Bayfront; the recipients of this honor are Robert Wardlaw, 2-12 Rosie Bonilla, Ed Harte, Betty Jean Longoria, and Jeff Jung, 2-13 with A. R.
