 1-4                                     of
 1-5                          William Orrin Bowers III
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins citizens
 1-7     across the state in mourning the loss of William Orrin Bowers III,
 1-8     who died January 8, 2001; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, A native Texan, William was born June 19, 1919,
1-10     in Giddings; he graduated from Beaumont High School and attended
1-11     Lamar Junior College and The University of Texas at Austin, where
1-12     he earned his bachelor of business administration degree and his
1-13     law degree; and
1-14           WHEREAS, William served his country faithfully in
1-15     World War II as a member of the Army Air Corps; a B-25 pilot, he
1-16     flew missions in New Guinea, the Philippines, and Japan; and
1-17           WHEREAS, A dedicated public servant, William held the
1-18     position of Assistant Secretary of State of Texas for 10 years,
1-19     from 1963 to 1973, and accumulated 20 years of service with the
1-20     state; he also served as a member of the boards of directors of
1-21     Transtechnology Corporation, MGF Oil Corporation, and University
 2-1     National Bank; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, William took an active role in supporting his
 2-3     community; he was affiliated with Kappa Alpha Fraternity and
 2-4     Delta Theta Phi legal fraternity and was a life member of
 2-5     The University of Texas Alumni Association; and
 2-6           WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, and generosity,
 2-7     William gave unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and
 2-8     valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and
 2-9           WHEREAS, Citizens throughout the state recognize
2-10     William Orrin Bowers as a true gentleman who dedicated himself
2-11     to serving the people of his state and nation; he leaves many
2-12     memories that will be treasured forever by his family and
2-13     friends; now, therefore, be it
2-14           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-15     77th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the family
2-16     of William Orrin Bowers III:  his wife, Ruth McLean Bowers; his
2-17     sisters, Gloria Ann Fulbright and Marjorie Anderson; his stepson,
2-18     Marrs McLean Bowman; his stepdaughters, Bonnie Bowman Korbell,
2-19     Ruthie Bowman Russell, Beth Bowman Harper, Margaret Bowman McMahan,
2-20     and Barbara Bowman; and his grandchildren; and, be it further
2-21           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his
2-22     family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate
2-23     and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
2-24     William Orrin Bowers III.
