 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 293
 1-3           WHEREAS, Since the discovery of DNA in 1953, the field of
 1-4     life science has evolved quickly and has led to medical advances
 1-5     that have improved the quality of life for millions around the
 1-6     world and in Texas, and the new generation of scientists and
 1-7     researchers of this state is indeed deserving of special legislative
 1-8     recognition; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, The cycle of innovation in the area of life science
1-10     has brought great benefits to the Lone Star State; not only has
1-11     the physical health of Texans been improved by these advances, but
1-12     the economic health of the state has benefited as well; and
1-13           WHEREAS, In 1998 alone, academic and research institutions
1-14     in Texas invested over $1 billion in research and development;
1-15     from these institutions, in tandem with almost 500 life science
1-16     companies across the state, new technologies emerge and are
1-17     introduced to consumers; and
1-18           WHEREAS, These new technologies range from innovative
1-19     treatments for cancer and infectious disease to advanced diagnostic
1-20     and medical devices, and they represent a tremendous advantage for
1-21     both the consumer and the economy in Texas; medical research and
1-22     life science companies produced a gross state product impact of
1-23     nearly $4 billion in 2000 and employed over 50,000 Texans; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, The continued growth and advancement of the
 2-2     life science industry in Texas holds great promise; some small
 2-3     measure of the potential that this remarkable field holds will
 2-4     be highlighted in a display in the Capitol Extension from
 2-5     February 19 to 23, 2001, with exhibits detailing the wonders of
 2-6     this growing field; and
 2-7           WHEREAS, The health and economic benefits provided to our
 2-8     state by the businesses and institutions involved in the life
 2-9     science industry are countless, and it is indeed appropriate to
2-10     recognize these entities and their important contributions at
2-11     this time; now, therefore, be it
2-12           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-13     77th Legislature, hereby declare February 20, 2001, Texas Life
2-14     Science Day and extend to all those individuals in this worthy
2-15     field warm best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
2-16           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in honor
2-17     of this auspicious occasion.
