 1-4                                     of
 1-5                              Myrle Greathouse
 1-6           WHEREAS, The passing of Myrle Greathouse of Abilene on
 1-7     December 29, 2000, at the age of 78, has brought a great loss
 1-8     to the family and many friends of this esteemed gentleman; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Mr. Greathouse was born in Amarillo on
1-10     September 19, 1922, and graduated from Amarillo High School,
1-11     where he played linebacker and fullback on the 1940 state
1-12     championship football team; a dedicated athlete and scholar,
1-13     he graduated from Oklahoma University in 1949, lettering in
1-14     football every year, and was later inducted into the Texas
1-15     High School Football Hall of Fame in Waco; and
1-16           WHEREAS, In 1943, this distinguished gentleman joined the
1-17     United States Marine Corps and, during his tenure of military
1-18     service, earned the prestigious Purple Heart; and
1-19           WHEREAS, Beginning a career that would span more than four
1-20     decades, Mr. Greathouse moved to Abilene in 1954 and assumed a
1-21     post with WES-TEX Drilling; his tremendous leadership ability
 2-1     enabled him to ascend through the ranks of the company, which
 2-2     included being named executive vice president in 1956 and then
 2-3     president in 1979; and
 2-4           WHEREAS, Renowned throughout the community for his
 2-5     compassionate nature, he gave generously of his time and talents
 2-6     to a host of community organizations, including the West Texas
 2-7     Rehabilitation Center and the Joint Venture for Crippled Children;
 2-8     in addition, this native Texan served as a board member of First
 2-9     National Bank of Abilene and Crockett County National Bank in
2-10     Ozona and San Angelo and as president of the Petroleum Club; and
2-11           WHEREAS, Throughout his noteworthy career, Mr. Greathouse
2-12     earned acclaim as both a community and industry leader; he and
2-13     WES-TEX were awarded the Petroleum Industry Award in 1986, he
2-14     was named Oilman of the Year in 1988 by the West Central Texas
2-15     Oil & Gas Association, he received the Golden Deeds Award, and
2-16     he was honored as Abilene's Outstanding Philanthropist by the
2-17     National Society of Fund-Raising Executives; a man to whom
2-18     giving was a lifelong commitment, he established the Greathouse
2-19     Foundation in 1997, which since its founding has distributed
2-20     over two million dollars to local charities; and
2-21           WHEREAS, A devoted husband to his wife, Marcella, and
2-22     father of three, Mr. Greathouse was a loyal member of Brook Hollow
2-23     Christian Church; he was a man of immense ability and integrity,
2-24     and although he will be greatly missed, his spirit will live on
 3-1     in the hearts and minds of the many people whose lives he touched;
 3-2     now, therefore, be it
 3-3           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 3-4     77th Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of
 3-5     Myrle Greathouse and extend sincere sympathy to the members of
 3-6     his family:  his wife, Marcella; his son, Micah; his daughter and
 3-7     son-in-law, Sharon and Mike McDonald; his sisters, Nettie Campbell
 3-8     and Betty McKinney; his grandchildren, Kelly Taylor and
 3-9     Christopher McDonald; his great-grandchildren, Brennen and
3-10     MacKenzie Taylor; and his many other relatives and friends;
3-11     and, be it further
3-12           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
3-13     prepared for the members of his family as an expression of deepest
3-14     sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns
3-15     this day, it do so in memory of Myrle Greathouse.
