 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 295
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Texas Senate is pleased to recognize
 1-4     February 20, 2001, as Shelby County Day and wholeheartedly welcome
 1-5     the county's visiting delegation to the State Capitol; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, Organized in 1837, Shelby County is one of Texas'
 1-7     original counties and was named for Revolutionary War hero
 1-8     Isaac Shelby; its early history is a dramatic one filled with
 1-9     accounts of battles between outlaw gangs and determined
1-10     homesteaders, including the feud that escalated into the infamous
1-11     Regulator-Moderator War; and
1-12           WHEREAS, Following this tumultuous period, the county
1-13     seat was relocated from the town of Shelbyville to Center, which was
1-14     named for its central geographic location in the county; Center is
1-15     home to one of the county's most noteworthy landmarks, a 19th
1-16     century Irish-castle-style courthouse that is featured in the
1-17     National Register of Historic Places; and
1-18           WHEREAS, Shelby County is located in the heart of the
1-19     East Texas Piney Woods and boasts a wealth of natural resources,
1-20     including dense stands of trees and rich bottomlands well watered
1-21     by the Sabine and Neches rivers; its economy has long been fueled
1-22     by timber and agricultural industries, and the county continues
1-23     to be one of Texas' leaders in poultry production; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, The citizens of the county have proven themselves
 2-2     to be deeply committed to not only preserving their county's storied
 2-3     past but also striving to meet the challenges of the future; education
 2-4     is of paramount importance to its residents, who strongly support
 2-5     such notable projects as Shelby College Center and the EnviroKids
 2-6     program at the C. H. Daniels Intermediate School; and
 2-7           WHEREAS, The county is also home to the 4-H Rough Riders'
 2-8     Precision Riding and Drill teams, outstanding groups that
 2-9     consistently excel in state competitions; moreover, it offers such
2-10     appealing annual events as the East Texas Poultry Festival and the
2-11     Fox Hunt at the Boles Field; and
2-12           WHEREAS, Steeped in tradition but continually forward-looking,
2-13     Shelby County is truly an asset to the Lone Star State, and it is
2-14     most fitting that we pay tribute to this fine community and its proud
2-15     residents at this time; now, therefore, be it
2-16           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-17     77th Legislature, hereby recognize February 20, 2001, as Shelby
2-18     County Day at the State Capitol and extend warmest best wishes to
2-19     the citizens of that fine county for a memorable observance.
