 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 305
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas extends a warm
 1-4     welcome to citizens of Comanche County, who will be traveling to
 1-5     Austin on February 21, 2001, to celebrate the many contributions
 1-6     their home county has made to Texas on Comanche County Day at the
 1-7     Capitol; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, Ideally situated in the hills of Central Texas,
 1-9     Comanche County enjoys scenic vistas, fertile soil, and warm,
1-10     sunny weather; and
1-11           WHEREAS, Established in 1856, both the town and county of
1-12     Comanche were named for the Comanche Indians who once dominated
1-13     the Southwest Plains; and
1-14           WHEREAS, The county takes great pride in its many historical
1-15     treasures; the City of Comanche is home to "Old Cora," one of the
1-16     oldest original existing courthouses in Texas; and
1-17           WHEREAS, The town also boasts the legendary "Fleming Oak,"
1-18     named for county forefather Martin Fleming who took refuge behind
1-19     the tree during an Indian attack; afterwards, he vowed to ensure
1-20     the oak's well-being, and succeeding generations of Comanche County
1-21     residents have continued to honor and care for the great Fleming
 2-1     Oak as a cherished living monument to their history; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, Present-day Comanche County residents are proud
 2-3     of their history and annually celebrate their heritage through
 2-4     annual celebrations such as the De Leon Peach and Melon Festivals,
 2-5     held each August, and the Comanche County Pow-Wow, which will
 2-6     celebrate its 20th anniversary in September; and
 2-7           WHEREAS, Comanche County boasts several other tourist
 2-8     attractions; thousands of Texans visit Comanche each Fourth of July
 2-9     to enjoy one of the largest fireworks displays in Central Texas,
2-10     and the cities of De Leon and Comanche are featured along the Texas
2-11     Forts Trail; and
2-12           WHEREAS, Residents of Comanche County enjoy a strong
2-13     local economy; manufacturers have moved to the area, creating
2-14     new jobs and increasing prosperity; the area is also known as
2-15     a high-quality producer of peanuts, pecans, watermelons,
2-16     cantaloupes, and milk; and
2-17           WHEREAS, Comanche County's greatest asset will always be
2-18     its community-minded residents, who work diligently to make their
2-19     county an even better place to live; and
2-20           WHEREAS, Friends of Historic Comanche, Incorporated, is but
2-21     one example of a group dedicated to improving Comanche County by
2-22     encouraging historic preservation in the area; the group hopes to
2-23     have the City of Comanche selected as a Texas Main Street City in
 3-1     the coming year; and
 3-2           WHEREAS, Citizens of Comanche County have much to be proud
 3-3     of; their home has played an important role in the history of
 3-4     Texas, and it will continue to do so; a grand place, with abundant
 3-5     natural beauty, industrious, civic-minded residents, and a healthy
 3-6     economy, Comanche County can look forward to a bright future; now,
 3-7     therefore, be it
 3-8           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 3-9     77th Legislature, hereby declare February 21, 2001, as
3-10     Comanche County Day at the Capitol and join residents in their
3-11     celebration of this auspicious occasion; and, be it further
3-12           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
3-13     for Comanche County as an expression of high regard from the
3-14     Texas Senate.
