 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to
 1-4     recognize Karen E. Jackson of Houston for her outstanding
 1-5     contributions in the fight against breast cancer; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, Thousands of African-American families have
 1-7     suffered devastating losses because of breast cancer, and many
 1-8     more will; breast cancer is the second-leading cancer killer of
 1-9     African-American women; and
1-10           WHEREAS, Breast cancer can be overcome, however, and one of
1-11     the strongest weapons in the fight against this disease is early
1-12     detection; breast cancer patients have a five-year survival rate of
1-13     over 95 percent if the disease is detected early; and
1-14           WHEREAS, Women who perform regular self-examinations and who
1-15     receive yearly mammograms put themselves at a distinct advantage in
1-16     their fight against breast cancer; therefore, it is crucial that
1-17     women in the United States have access to information concerning
1-18     early detection and prevention; and
1-19           WHEREAS, A dynamic and inspiring Texan, Karen E. Jackson is
1-20     working to ensure that African-American women receive life-saving
1-21     information about breast cancer through her organization, Sisters
 2-1     Network, Incorporated; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, Founded in 1994 and headquartered in Houston,
 2-3     Sisters Network, Incorporated, is widely recognized by the
 2-4     medical community as an invaluable resource for African-American
 2-5     women; with more than 25 chapters across the nation, Sisters
 2-6     Network, Incorporated, is dedicated to saving the lives of
 2-7     African-American women through community workshops, corporate
 2-8     partnerships, private donations, and its annual African-American
 2-9     Breast Cancer National Conference; and
2-10           WHEREAS, By encouraging women across the United States to
2-11     take a positive approach to fighting breast cancer and through
2-12     its support of breast cancer research, Sisters Network,
2-13     Incorporated, has participated in saving the lives of thousands;
2-14     the State of Texas is indeed proud to be the national headquarters
2-15     of such a noble organization; now, therefore, be it
2-16           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-17     77th Legislature, hereby commend the altruism of Karen E. Jackson
2-18     and extend a sincere thank you to Sisters Network, Incorporated,
2-19     for the vital life-saving work it performs for Texans and for
2-20     women across the nation; and, be it further
2-21           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-22     this esteemed lady and her organization as an expression of high
2-23     regard from the Texas Senate.
