 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 339
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure in
 1-4     recognizing Edward H. Harte of Corpus Christi for his outstanding
 1-5     work as a leading citizen of this State and of Corpus Christi and
 1-6     as an extraordinary philanthropist; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, A nationally noted journalist and businessman,
 1-8     Mr. Harte is the former publisher of the Corpus Christi Caller-Times,
 1-9     a position he held from 1962 until his retirement in 1987; he and
1-10     his late wife, Janet, have been very active community leaders
1-11     who have generously devoted time and energy to educational and
1-12     charitable organizations, exemplifying their beliefs in playing a
1-13     major role for the betterment of their community and other worthy
1-14     causes; and
1-15           WHEREAS, In September, 2000, Ed Harte announced a munificent
1-16     gift of $46 million to Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi to fund
1-17     the Harte Research Center for Gulf of Mexico Studies; his goal
1-18     was to provide funding to establish a world-class research
1-19     center devoted to the issues and problems associated with the
1-20     sustainability of the Gulf of Mexico from the perspective of
1-21     biodiversity as well as the economy; and
1-22           WHEREAS, Earlier, Mr. and Mrs. Harte had already given
 2-1     over $20 million to support the arts, education, the homeless,
 2-2     and the less fortunate; among their many gifts were money for a
 2-3     performing arts center at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and
 2-4     funds for a new city branch library; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, Mr. Harte and his brother, Houston Harte, also
 2-6     donated to the Big Bend National Park 66,000 acres to create the
 2-7     North Rosillos Mountains Preserve; they endowed two professorships
 2-8     at The University of Texas, Austin; and they gave funding for a
 2-9     building at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas, where
2-10     Mr. Harte and his family lived for a number of years; and
2-11           WHEREAS, Because of his dedication to habitat protection
2-12     and preserving natural assets for future generations, he was
2-13     instrumental in promoting the establishment of the Padre Island
2-14     National Seashore and the Mustang Island State Park; he also gave
2-15     much time and energy to such organizations as the National Audubon
2-16     Society, where he served on the board for three years and as its
2-17     chair for five years from 1974 to 1979; and
2-18           WHEREAS, A highly respected community leader who has
2-19     generously devoted his time, energy, and personal wealth to
2-20     educational and charitable organizations, Mr. Harte has maintained
2-21     and visibly demonstrated that the desire to practice philanthropy
2-22     grows throughout one's life; and
2-23           WHEREAS, An exemplary gentleman, Ed Harte is a source
2-24     of strength to many, and his worthy accomplishments reflect
 3-1     his dedication and his commitment to his fellowman and future
 3-2     generations; now, therefore, be it
 3-3           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 3-4     77th Legislature, hereby commend Edward H. Harte on his exceptional
 3-5     achievements and contributions to his city, Corpus Christi, the
 3-6     Coastal Bend area, and the State of Texas; and, be it further
 3-7           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 3-8     him as an expression of high esteem from the Texas Senate.
