1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 345 1-3 In Memory 1-4 of 1-5 Doug Sahm 1-6 WHEREAS, The family, friends, and many fans of Doug Sahm 1-7 were greatly saddened by the passing of this esteemed Texas musician 1-8 on November 18, 1999, at the age of 58; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Exploring numerous musical genres with a sound 1-10 uniquely his own, Mr. Sahm earned recognition as a talented player 1-11 of the steel guitar, mandolin, and fiddle, and his artistic genius 1-12 and noteworthy contributions made him a Texas icon; and 1-13 WHEREAS, At the age of five, Mr. Sahm made his debut 1-14 singing "Teardrops in My Heart" on a San Antonio radio station, and 1-15 six years later he was a featured performer on the radio program 1-16 Louisiana Hayride, appearing alongside such country greats as 1-17 Hank Williams and Faron Young; Mr. Sahm declined an offer to appear 1-18 regularly at the Grand Ol' Opry so he could complete junior high 1-19 school, but he continued to play in local venues and released 1-20 numerous singles of his own; and 1-21 WHEREAS, Mr. Sahm formed the internationally renowned 1-22 Sir Douglas Quintet during the 1960s; the group released the hit 2-1 track "She's About a Mover" and earned the admiration of both fans 2-2 and fellow performers, sharing the stage with such acclaimed singers 2-3 as Bob Dylan and Jerry Garcia; and 2-4 WHEREAS, He continued to garner praise after forming the 2-5 Texas Tornados, a group that produced six superb albums and won a 2-6 Grammy Award; in 1999, he founded a record label, Tornado Records, 2-7 and produced his own material as well as albums for other area 2-8 musicians; and 2-9 WHEREAS, A true Texas music legend who received 2-10 international respect and adoration for his many talents, Mr. Sahm 2-11 will undoubtedly live on in the music he made and in the hearts of 2-12 the many people he so deeply touched; now, therefore, be it 2-13 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-14 77th Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of Doug Sahm and 2-15 extend sincere condolences to his family, friends, and fans; and, 2-16 be it further 2-17 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be 2-18 prepared for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from 2-19 the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do 2-20 so in memory of Doug Sahm. 2-21 Van de Putte 2-22 ______________________________________ 2-23 President of the Senate 2-24 I hereby certify that the above 2-25 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-26 on February 26, 2001, by a rising vote. 2-27 ______________________________________ 2-28 Secretary of the Senate 2-29 ______________________________________ 2-30 Member, Texas Senate
