 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 359
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Texas Senate is pleased to join the citizens of
 1-4     Denton County as they joyously celebrate Denton County Day at the
 1-5     State Capitol in Austin on February 27, 2001; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, Named for pioneer lawyer and minister John B. Denton,
 1-7     Denton County has a distinguished history and was created from the
 1-8     original Peters Colony Grant in 1846 by the first Texas Legislature;
 1-9     and
1-10           WHEREAS, Serving as the gateway to the Dallas-Fort Worth area,
1-11     Denton County is located at the center of the North Texas region;
1-12     the county has a population of nearly 450,000 people and continues
1-13     to grow rapidly; and
1-14           WHEREAS, Renowned for its interest in education, the
1-15     county is the home of several excellent schools, including
1-16     the University of North Texas, Texas Woman's University, and
1-17     North Central Texas College; and
1-18           WHEREAS, The emphasis on education in the county is also
1-19     reflected in its 11 public school districts which provide a
1-20     superior academic experience for the more than 60,000 students
1-21     in its 93 learning facilities; and
1-22           WHEREAS, Denton County is home to many famous corporate
1-23     residents, including the American Airlines Maintenance Center,
1-24     Andrew Corporation, Boeing, Federal Express, a Peterbilt Motors
 2-1     plant, and Xerox; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, Denton County is one of the largest regions for
 2-3     horse breeding and training in the southwestern United States; the
 2-4     county also boasts the Texas Motor Speedway, which is the second
 2-5     largest sports facility in the United States, as well as the newest
 2-6     tourism destination in the Dallas-Fort Worth area; and
 2-7           WHEREAS, The citizens of Denton County are to be commended
 2-8     for their industriousness and for their gracious hospitality to
 2-9     those who visit this beautiful county; now, therefore, be it
2-10           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-11     77th Legislature, hereby recognize February 27, 2001, as
2-12     Denton County Day and extend best wishes to its citizens for
2-13     a most enjoyable day; and, be it further
2-14           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as a
2-15     memento of this glorious day.
