 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 360
 1-3           WHEREAS, On February 27, 2001, many proud residents of Athens
 1-4     gather in Austin to celebrate Athens Day at the State Capitol; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, Though it was first incorporated in 1856, Athens
 1-6     did not begin its steady development until it was reincorporated
 1-7     in 1901; since that time, this charming North Texas town has seen
 1-8     significant growth and the emergence of a dynamic citizenry; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, The fertile terrain and temperate climate of the
1-10     area have made Athens an agribusiness center; in addition, the city
1-11     is an outdoor enthusiast's paradise, providing opportunities for
1-12     scuba diving, picnicking, and many other recreational adventures;
1-13     and
1-14           WHEREAS, Home of Trinity Valley Community College, this
1-15     unique town features many exciting annual events, including the
1-16     Texas Fiddlers' Contest and Reunion, the Black-Eyed Pea Jamboree,
1-17     the Athens Triathlon, and the Fletcher Davis Hamburger Cook-off;
1-18     several cultural and tourist attractions grace the landscape of
1-19     this city as well, including the East Texas Arboretum, the
1-20     Henderson County Historical Museum, the Murchison Galleries,
1-21     and the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center, which features
1-22     300,000 gallons of aquarium exhibits and every major species
 2-1     of freshwater fish found in Texas; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, While visiting the State Capitol, the Athens
 2-3     contingent will meet with representatives of various committees
 2-4     and state agencies to discuss issues of interest to local
 2-5     residents; and
 2-6           WHEREAS, This lovely city continues to be one of the
 2-7     Lone Star State's great assets and an outstanding place in which
 2-8     to live, work, and raise a family, and it is indeed appropriate
 2-9     that the citizens of Athens be given special recognition at this
2-10     time; now, therefore, be it
2-11           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-12     77th Legislature, hereby recognize February 27, 2001, as Athens
2-13     Day at the State Capitol and join the citizens of that city in
2-14     paying tribute to one of Texas' fine communities.
