 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 365
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Texas Senate is proud to welcome members
 1-4     of the Texas Motor Transportation Association to Austin on
 1-5     February 27, 2001, as they celebrate Trucking Day at the
 1-6     State Capitol; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, One out of every 11 workers in Texas, or more than
 1-8     620,000 people, is employed by the trucking industry; there are
 1-9     approximately 43,000 motor carriers registered with the Motor
1-10     Carrier Division of the Texas Department of Transportation and
1-11     in excess of 500,000 commercial vehicles operating daily in the
1-12     Lone Star State; and
1-13           WHEREAS, Trucks transport nearly 60 percent of all the
1-14     state's manufactured commodities, delivering necessary products
1-15     to every Texas community, 72 percent of which rely exclusively
1-16     on these motor carriers for their goods; the trucking industry
1-17     further benefits the economy by generating over $17.5 billion
1-18     in annual salaries and paying almost $1.7 billion in state and
1-19     federal highway taxes and fees; and
1-20           WHEREAS, Safety has long been a priority of the motor
1-21     carrier industry, as evidenced by the fact that since 1980
1-22     the number of heavy trucks involved in accidents in Texas has
 2-1     decreased 40 percent, despite a 37.5 percent increase in trucking
 2-2     miles traveled; in addition to complying with the nation's
 2-3     environmental regulations, the Texas Motor Transportation
 2-4     Association also has a Safety Certification Program for safety
 2-5     professionals, an industry-funded commercial motor vehicle safety
 2-6     initiative designed to promote safety on Texas highways, and a
 2-7     variety of educational programs aimed at both the industry and
 2-8     the motoring public; and
 2-9           WHEREAS, The trucking industry is a vital part of the
2-10     Lone Star State's economy, providing a truly invaluable service
2-11     as well as employing many proud Texans, and it is indeed a
2-12     privilege to honor it at this time; now, therefore, be it
2-13           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-14     77th Legislature, hereby recognize February 27, 2001, as
2-15     Trucking Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome
2-16     to all those associated with this worthy event.
