 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 366
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 1-4     recognize the City of San Marcos on the grand occasion of its
 1-5     150th anniversary; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, A city of charm and natural beauty, San Marcos was
 1-7     designated a county seat when Hays County was organized in 1848;
 1-8     it had been chosen for a settlement by San Jacinto battle hero
 1-9     General Edward Burleson in 1844; the town was incorporated in
1-10     1877; and
1-11           WHEREAS, San Marcos is located at the head of the beautiful
1-12     San Marcos River, which is fed by springs that reportedly were
1-13     sighted in 1689 by Alonso de Leon's men when they searched for
1-14     La Salle; the river served as a watering place for Indians
1-15     throughout the ages, and today, over 150 million gallons of
1-16     water are produced daily by over 200 springs; and
1-17           WHEREAS, Situated in the Austin-San Antonio corridor,
1-18     San Marcos is 30 miles south of Austin and is known as a gateway
1-19     to the Texas Hill Country; it has grown from a town of 389 founding
1-20     settlers to a city of approximately 40,469 residents; and
1-21           WHEREAS, The diversified San Marcos economy is based on
1-22     educational institutions, tourism, and light manufacturing; the
1-23     city is home to the Central Texas Medical Center and has a transit
 2-1     system that operates seven routes connecting the historic downtown
 2-2     with attractions, accommodations, and outlet shopping; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, New development and population growth in the city
 2-4     have been managed with care in order to preserve historic sites
 2-5     and natural habitats; and
 2-6           WHEREAS, Through hard work and clear-sighted goals, the
 2-7     citizens of San Marcos have kept their city clean and inviting,
 2-8     and they deserve to be proud of their efforts and accomplishments;
 2-9     now, therefore, be it
2-10           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-11     77th Legislature, hereby express appreciation to the people
2-12     of San Marcos for their contributions to our state and extend
2-13     best wishes to them for a joyous 150th anniversary celebration;
2-14     and, be it further
2-15           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-16     the residents of San Marcos as a token of esteem from the
2-17     Texas Senate.
