 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 371
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 1-4     join the citizens of the Texas Panhandle in proclaiming Wednesday,
 1-5     March 7, 2001, as Panhandle Day at the Capitol; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, A spectacular region in Texas, the Panhandle is rich
 1-7     in history and scenic plains and is home to a host of cities
 1-8     offering a wide array of opportunities; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, The area is a combination of traditional ranch
1-10     lands unchanged for centuries, High Plains agriculture, and large
1-11     stretches of oil and gas reserves; and
1-12           WHEREAS, A glimpse of the region's past is provided by
1-13     the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum located on the campus
1-14     of West Texas A&M University; the museum provides an intriguing
1-15     overview of life in the Old West; and
1-16           WHEREAS, Since 1995, the Amarillo National Research
1-17     Center, an Amarillo-based university research consortium, has
1-18     provided Texas universities with more than $32.5 million for
1-19     research and has represented the interests of the State of Texas
1-20     with the Department of Energy; and
1-21           WHEREAS, The Panhandle City of Amarillo was chosen from a
1-22     nationwide search as the city to house the Bell Helicopter Textron
1-23     Incorporated Tiltrotor Assembly Center; the center is the first
 2-1     major aircraft manufacturing facility to be built in Texas in
 2-2     decades; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, The state's well known Palo Duro Canyon State Park
 2-4     is located in the heart of the Panhandle; the park's arresting
 2-5     scenic canyon contains rocks spanning 200 million years of
 2-6     geologic time; and
 2-7           WHEREAS, With more than 400,000 residents, the Panhandle
 2-8     offers the opportunities and vitality generated by modern cities
 2-9     and industry, yet its natural beauty and spectacular scenery remain
2-10     unchanged; now, therefore, be it
2-11           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-12     77th Legislature, hereby commend the residents of the Panhandle
2-13     on their many contributions to our state and extend to them best
2-14     wishes for a joyous Panhandle Day; and, be it further
2-15           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-16     the Panhandle of Texas as an expression of high regard from the
2-17     Texas Senate.
