1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 385 1-3 In Memory 1-4 of 1-5 John Sullivan Justin, Jr. 1-6 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the 1-7 citizens of Fort Worth in mourning the death of a beloved 1-8 Texas icon, John Sullivan Justin, Jr., who died recently at 1-9 age 84; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Born in Nocona, Texas, on January 17, 1917, John 1-11 was the son of John Justin, Sr., and Ruby Justin; he received 1-12 his early education in Fort Worth and Washington, D.C., schools 1-13 before attending Oklahoma A&M University and Texas Christian 1-14 University; John also served his country during World War II as 1-15 a member of the Merchant Marine; and 1-16 WHEREAS, A greatly admired businessman and heir to Justin 1-17 Industries, John was the third generation of his family to run the 1-18 namesake boot-making business, which was founded in 1879; because 1-19 of his expert management, Justin Industries rose to become the 1-20 preeminent manufacturer of both work and western boots, as well 1-21 as western accessories; and 2-1 WHEREAS, John Justin's outstanding reputation as a 2-2 businessman was matched by his reputation as a civic leader; 2-3 he served Fort Worth citizens as a city councilman from 1959 2-4 to 1961 and as mayor from 1961 to 1963; and 2-5 WHEREAS, After serving as mayor, John never held public 2-6 office again; however, his renown as a city leader and 2-7 philanthropist in the Fort Worth community continued to grow; 2-8 though he championed many projects and institutions, John will 2-9 be remembered most for his ardent support of the Fort Worth Stock 2-10 Show, in particular its rodeo, and Texas Christian University; and 2-11 WHEREAS, John regarded his Southwestern heritage as sacred; 2-12 he worked successfully to preserve Fort Worth's "cowtown" roots, 2-13 believing the city's history made it exceptional and distinguished 2-14 it among modern American cities; despite his success and wealth, 2-15 he remained an unassuming person, who devoted himself to preserving 2-16 the cherished culture of his Fort Worth home; and 2-17 WHEREAS, Texas has lost one of its greatest champions with 2-18 the passing of John Sullivan Justin; he was a distinguished leader 2-19 and a true gentleman, and his life's professional and civic work 2-20 will ensure that Texas' western heritage will be passed down for 2-21 generations to come; the state is truly fortunate to have counted 2-22 John among its citizens; now, therefore, be it 2-23 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-24 77th Legislature, hereby express its sincere condolences to 3-1 the family of John Sullivan Justin, Jr.: his wife, Jane; his 3-2 son, David; and his daughter, Mary; and, be it further 3-3 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 3-4 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the 3-5 Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it 3-6 do so in memory of John Sullivan Justin, Jr. 3-7 Moncrief 3-8 ______________________________________ 3-9 President of the Senate 3-10 I hereby certify that the above 3-11 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-12 on April 23, 2001, by a rising vote. 3-13 ______________________________________ 3-14 Secretary of the Senate 3-15 ______________________________________ 3-16 Member, Texas Senate
