 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 387
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 1-4     recognize Troop 1 of the Boy Scouts of America on the occasion of
 1-5     its 90th birthday, which is being celebrated in March of 2001; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Boy Scouts of America was incorporated in
 1-7     Washington by William D. Boyce on February 8, 1910, and was based
 1-8     on a program initiated in England by Lord Robert Baden-Powell in
 1-9     1907; and
1-10           WHEREAS, In March of 1911, Lyman J. Bailey organized Troop 1
1-11     in Austin, Texas; the troop initially consisted of 40 boys and was
1-12     under the leadership of Scoutmaster P. M. Vardell; the troop met
1-13     every Friday night at the Young Men's Christian Society Hall on
1-14     Willow Street; and
1-15           WHEREAS, On February 12, 1916, a Field Day was held by six
1-16     scout troops at Pease Park to commemorate the fifth anniversary
1-17     of the organization in Austin and the sixth anniversary of the
1-18     Boy Scout movement in the United States; Field Days then became
1-19     a tradition in Austin for celebrating Boy Scout anniversaries;
1-20     and
1-21           WHEREAS, By 1918, Troop 1 had 25 members; by 1920, the
1-22     membership had increased to 39, and the troop was under the
 2-1     leadership of Scoutmaster I. I. Nelson; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, The charter organization for Troop 1 was the
 2-3     State Capitol in 1938, and since the mid-1940s, the charter
 2-4     organization has been the First Presbyterian Church; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, Troop 1 holds the distinction of being the
 2-6     oldest continuously rechartered troop in Austin and is part of
 2-7     the oldest Boy Scout Council in Texas; now, therefore, be it
 2-8           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 2-9     77th Legislature, hereby commend Boy Scouts of America Troop 1
2-10     and extend congratulations to its members on the occasion of its
2-11     90th birthday; and, be it further
2-12           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-13     Troop 1 as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
