 1-5                               G. C. Broughton
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
 1-7     of Big Spring in mourning the loss of one of the city's most
 1-8     esteemed and well-loved citizens, G. C. Broughton, who died
 1-9     February 7, 2001, at the age of 78; and
1-10           WHEREAS, The life of one individual can have a remarkable
1-11     impact on the lives of many, and such a person was G. C. Broughton,
1-12     who contributed to the progress and development of his city and
1-13     the business community; and
1-14           WHEREAS, Owner and operator of farms in Howard, Martin,
1-15     Glasscock, Gaines, Hale, Floyd, and Lamb counties and of Broughton
1-16     Implement for 25 years, this son of pioneering parents was also
1-17     actively involved in West Texas oil and gas; and
1-18           WHEREAS, The highly respected businessman and community
1-19     leader was greatly admired for his devotion to his city and its
1-20     citizens; he freely offered his abilities and energies to the
1-21     Salvation Army, Methodist Hospital in Lubbock, Howard County Tax
1-22     Appraisal District, Ruidoso Jockey Club, and Security State Bank;
 2-1     and
 2-2           WHEREAS, Considered by many as a motivating force in his
 2-3     community, Mr. Broughton was recognized by his fellow Rotarians
 2-4     with their highest form of praise, the Paul Harris Fellow award;
 2-5     and
 2-6           WHEREAS, An active member of the First Baptist Church,
 2-7     Mr. Broughton truly believed in practicing his faith in his
 2-8     daily life and will be remembered for the affection, confidence,
 2-9     and loyalty he inspired in those with whom he associated; and
2-10           WHEREAS, The death of such a fine citizen is felt not only
2-11     by his family and friends, but also by the people who benefitted
2-12     from his generosity and community spirit; now, therefore, be it
2-13           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-14     77th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
2-15     family of G. C. Broughton:  his beloved wife, Jean Broughton;
2-16     his stepsons, Casey Wilder and Scott Wilder; his granddaughter,
2-17     Kyla Wilder; and his brother, Robert Broughton; and, be it further
2-18           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his
2-19     family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate,
2-20     and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
2-21     G. C. Broughton.
