 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 407
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Honorable Pitser H. Garrison has long been
 1-4     a respected leader of the Lufkin community, and his numerous
 1-5     contributions to the State of Texas are indeed deserving of
 1-6     special recognition; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, Born on March 7, 1912, in Lufkin, this esteemed
 1-8     gentleman is the son of a highly respected public official and
 1-9     the grandson of a former Texas senator; an outstanding athlete
1-10     and scholar, Mr. Garrison graduated from Lufkin High School and
1-11     Stephen F. Austin State University before earning his law degree
1-12     from The University of Texas at Austin; and
1-13           WHEREAS, Committed to public service at a young age,
1-14     he enlisted in the United States Army following the bombing of
1-15     Pearl Harbor and was commissioned as a second lieutenant with
1-16     the Eighth Service Command in San Antonio; and
1-17           WHEREAS, Mr. Garrison became mayor of Lufkin in 1970 and
1-18     served with distinction until 1988, making his mayoral tenure
1-19     the longest in the history of the city; under his astute guidance,
1-20     the close-knit community flourished into one of the most progressive
1-21     small cities in Texas; and
1-22           WHEREAS, This East Texas icon also enjoyed much success
1-23     in his career as a lawyer and businessman; he has been ranked
1-24     among the leading attorneys in the state and was the president
 2-1     and chief executive officer of Lufkin National Bank and First
 2-2     City National Bank; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, A man dedicated to the betterment of his community,
 2-4     Mr. Garrison has given generously of his time and talents to a
 2-5     host of worthwhile endeavors; he has held leadership positions
 2-6     with the Angelina County Appraisal District, the Angelina County
 2-7     Chamber of Commerce, and the Deep East Texas Council of
 2-8     Governments; in recognition of his civic-minded efforts, he was
 2-9     presented the prestigious Angelina Award, Lufkin's highest honor
2-10     for community service, and the East Texan of the Year Award by
2-11     the East Texas Chamber of Commerce; and
2-12           WHEREAS, Mr. Garrison is celebrating his 89th birthday
2-13     on March 7, 2001; he is an outstanding Texan who has acted with
2-14     integrity and compassion, working to build a bright and promising
2-15     future for the next generation of leaders, and his lifetime of
2-16     accomplishments truly merits our praise; now, therefore, be it
2-17           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-18     77th Legislature, hereby recognize March 7, 2001, as
2-19     Pitser H. Garrison Day in Texas and commend this estimable
2-20     individual for his numerous accomplishments; and, be it further
2-21           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
2-22     prepared for Mr. Garrison as an expression of highest regard
2-23     from the Texas Senate.
