1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 411 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins citizens 1-4 across the country in recognizing March, 2001, as American Red 1-5 Cross Month; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Clara Barton founded the American Red Cross in 1-7 1881 in an effort to prevent human suffering; and 1-8 WHEREAS, Clara Barton's greatest contribution to the 1-9 American people and those around the world was her selfless 1-10 devotion to those in need; and 1-11 WHEREAS, One of the most prestigious volunteer-led groups 1-12 in the United States, the American Red Cross was chartered and 1-13 authorized by Congress to act in time of need and be responsible 1-14 for national and international relief in peace time; and 1-15 WHEREAS, The safety of the blood supply is the American 1-16 Red Cross' top priority, and it supplies safe blood and blood 1-17 products whenever and wherever needed; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Disaster relief has been provided by the American 1-19 Red Cross for more than 120 years; last year 83,000 Red Cross 1-20 volunteers responded to more than 63,000 disasters; and 1-21 WHEREAS, People have counted on the American Red Cross 1-22 since 1914 for the skills and information they need to be safe 1-23 at home, at work, at school, and at play; and 2-1 WHEREAS, The American Red Cross is saving the lives of 2-2 people undergoing calamities such as epidemics, disasters, armed 2-3 conflict, or economic collapse around the world; wherever the 2-4 military goes, the organization is there for them and their 2-5 families 24 hours a day, 365 days a year; and 2-6 WHEREAS, In Texas, by June 30, 2000, there were 719 2-7 paid staff, and 66,789 volunteers handled over 3,700 disasters; 2-8 272,820 people were enrolled in CPR and First Aid, and HIV/AIDS 2-9 enrollees numbered 71,817; the total number of American Red Cross 2-10 chapters in the state was 38, and there were 37,868 Emergency 2-11 Communication/International Tracing assists; and 2-12 WHEREAS, March, 2001, has been designated American 2-13 Red Cross Month by Presidential proclamation to celebrate the 2-14 achievements of this group and the comfort it brings to the 2-15 lives of so many Texans; now, therefore, be it 2-16 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-17 77th Legislature, hereby urge Texans to volunteer for or to 2-18 contribute to their local Red Cross chapter; and, be it further 2-19 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-20 the American Red Cross as an expression of the highest regard of 2-21 the Texas Senate. 2-22 Armbrister 2-23 ______________________________________ 2-24 President of the Senate 2-25 I hereby certify that the above 2-26 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-27 on March 7, 2001. 2-28 ______________________________________ 2-29 Secretary of the Senate 3-1 ______________________________________ 3-2 Member, Texas Senate
