 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 413
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride
 1-4     in recognizing the Nu Phi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity,
 1-5     Incorporated, on the grand occasion of the chapter's 75th
 1-6     anniversary; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated,
 1-8     was organized November 17, 1911, at Howard University in
 1-9     Washington, D.C., by Professor Ernest E. Just, Edgar A. Love,
1-10     Frank Coleman, and Oscar Cooper; it was the first Greek letter
1-11     fraternity to be organized at a Black university; and
1-12           WHEREAS, The fraternity is composed of 12 Regional Districts,
1-13     and the Ninth District is holding its 64th Annual Meeting in
1-14     Houston, Texas, from April 12 through April 15, 2001; and
1-15           WHEREAS, The name of the fraternity represents three Greek
1-16     letters that mean "friendship is essential to the soul," and the
1-17     fraternity's cardinal principles are manhood, scholarship,
1-18     perseverance, and uplift; famous Omega men include Bill Cosby,
1-19     Michael Jordan, Carter G. Woodson, and Vernon Jordan; and
1-20           WHEREAS, The Nu Phi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity,
1-21     Incorporated, was founded in 1926 and was the first chapter of
1-22     the fraternity to be established in Houston; and
1-23           WHEREAS, The Nu Phi Chapter provides programs that pertain
 2-1     to economic development, educational development, international
 2-2     awareness and involvement, physical and mental health, and
 2-3     political awareness and involvement in the community; and
 2-4           WHEREAS, A member of the Houston Area Chapters Coalition,
 2-5     Nu Phi has co-sponsored the Carl Lewis Walk-A-Thon and such
 2-6     annual programs as the blood drive, the health fair, the voter
 2-7     registration drive and political forum, the Fraternity's
 2-8     Founders' Day Banquet, and OmegaFest; and
 2-9           WHEREAS, The Nu Phi Chapter is being honored at the 64th
2-10     Annual Ninth District Meeting in celebration of its 75th
2-11     anniversary and legacy and its many accomplishments over the
2-12     years; now, therefore, be it
2-13           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-14     77th Legislature, hereby commend the members of the Nu Phi
2-15     Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, on their
2-16     invaluable contributions to the fraternity and the Houston
2-17     community and welcome the visitors from Arkansas, Louisiana,
2-18     Oklahoma, and Texas to the 64th Annual Ninth District Meeting;
2-19     and, be it further
2-20           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-21     the Nu Phi Chapter in honor of its 75th anniversary.
