 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 414
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased
 1-4     to recognize the National Association for the Advancement of
 1-5     Colored People, Houston branch, for its excellent program, "A
 1-6     Journey Towards Excellence"; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, "A Journey Towards Excellence" is being held on
 1-8     March 10, 2001, by the National Association for the Advancement
 1-9     of Colored People in Houston to raise funds for the Urban
1-10     Scholarship Program; and
1-11           WHEREAS, The Urban Scholarship Program is a nonprofit
1-12     partnership between Anheuser-Busch Companies, Incorporated, and
1-13     the Houston branch of the National Association for the Advancement
1-14     of Colored People to prepare inner-city youth for the challenges
1-15     of the next century; and
1-16           WHEREAS, The program provides scholarships for students
1-17     from area high schools who have excelled in academics and shown
1-18     outstanding leadership skills; and
1-19           WHEREAS, Grassroots community organizations, with support
1-20     from a well-known corporate partner, raise money in their area to
1-21     send local students to college; the money raised in the Houston
1-22     community stays in the Houston community; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, Those who apply must be graduating seniors with
 2-2     a grade point average of 2.5 or better, and they must furnish a
 2-3     short essay; to date, there are 13 deserving students now receiving
 2-4     scholarships each semester; these scholars must maintain a grade
 2-5     point average of 2.5 or better; so far, the accomplishments of all
 2-6     the scholars are most gratifying; now, therefore, be it
 2-7           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 2-8     77th Legislature, hereby commend and applaud the Houston branch
 2-9     of the National Association for the  Advancement of Colored People
2-10     for its unstinting support of "A Journey Towards Excellence"
2-11     benefitting the Urban Scholarship Program; and, be it further
2-12           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
2-13     Houston branch as an expression of the highest regard and esteem
2-14     of the Texas Senate.
