 1-3           WHEREAS, The central Texas city of Gatesville is the
 1-4     home of reportedly the largest spur collection in the world, the
 1-5     Lloyd and Madge Mitchell Collection at the Coryell Museum and
 1-6     Historical Center; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, Lloyd Mitchell was a coach and a history,
 1-8     civics, and government teacher in Gatesville; he developed his
 1-9     interest in spurs as a boy; as he told the story, he found a
1-10     single spur on his way to Yellowstone National Park and had been
1-11     looking for its match ever since; and
1-12           WHEREAS, Over more than seven decades, friends, family,
1-13     students, and colleagues all contributed to this growing treasure
1-14     trove, which came to include western art and memorabilia and other
1-15     artifacts; and
1-16           WHEREAS, The collection, which was donated to the
1-17     Coryell Museum in 1995, contains spurs made from heavy iron,
1-18     bronze, and wood, and dates back to the 13th century; it features
1-19     men's and ladies' boots as well as spurs, ladies' petticoat spurs,
1-20     military, rodeo, and novelty spurs, and spurs from across Europe,
 2-1     Russia, Morocco, the Philippines, Mexico, and South America; the
 2-2     spurs worn by Pancho Villa and Jacqueline Kennedy are among its
 2-3     notable highlights; and
 2-4           WHEREAS, Residents of the City of Gatesville have
 2-5     demonstrated a commitment to preserving and bringing public
 2-6     attention to the Mitchell exhibits, and it is most appropriate
 2-7     to take this opportunity to commend their efforts; now, therefore,
 2-8     be it
 2-9           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-10     77th Legislature, hereby recognize Gatesville as the home of the
2-11     world's largest spur collection and commend all those associated
2-12     with the Mitchell Collection and the Coryell Museum and Historical
2-13     Center for their significant efforts to preserve this unique slice
2-14     of history for future generations.
